Avatar G212 Vintage Cab - Which speakers?

The world is no longer a safe place, I have gas again!

I have decided to get a speaker cab worthy of the Celtic Aedan instead of just buying a stop gap cab to get by on. The sickness is back. I am going to get the Avatar G212 Vintage cab after looking at their website. I love the look that I have with the current combo chassis and Avatar does that exact look but in a 212 closed back cab. Get the gold piping to mirror the gold on the Celtic and I gots one sexy looking and sounding rig.

The speakers are the consideration. V30s, G12H30s or greenbacks. I am probably going to mix speakers and the V30/G12H was my first choice but the more I read the more I started leaning towards either the G12H or greenbacks with a serious thought to combining the G12H with a greenback.

This particular rig will be my clean/blues/hard rock rig. I am not really going for a over the top gain/modern tone which is leading me away from the V30s but I am being open minded at this point. Half the fun is thinking and shopping and I can always get another G212 cab in the future with a different blend of speakers or a pair of V30s and run 2 212 cabs in the future if I decide to be hard rock/metal guy in the future. For now I want thick and creamy with good break up at lower levels. I can peel the paint with another rig down the road!

You are the guys to ask so what do you think?

I don't know the Celtic amp at all, but it sounds like you want G12-65's to me. GB's would be great too, but you'd only be able to run a small amp through them.

The Celtic is a cathode biased pair of el34s and Scott said it has a front end simular to a Matchless Lightening. Tube rectum fryer...

35 watts so the greenbacks are not an issue

Sounds really Voxy and a lot like the matchless combos I have played.

A Celestion G12H-30 cannot be all bad I would hazard a guess Sir. Check with the amp tech Mr. Scott F., but I think it'd be golden..and I think I would pair it with a V30. Just so happens I do have a G12H-30 ( 16 Ohm though which may not work for your probably 8 ohm cabinet)collecting dust.I've really no use for it..its yours for shipping.

yes Sir, but it's 16 Ohms..other than that, send me your addy. I sent a speaker to another mod here, so Ive got references. if you want it, I'll send it out ..just PM me the addy, and no rush on the shipping charges..I really need to free up some space around here.. I'm inundated wiht cabinets and speakers and too much junk around here I just need some breathing room lol.

I was about to suggest my favorite speaker combo Weber Silver Bell and Blue Dog (I have 50 watt pre rola treated ceramic magnet versions in my tweaker 212x).

So no opinions on pairing a V12H30 with a greenback?
 
I can tell you from experience the V30/G12H30 is a great combo in that cab. My bandmate runs that in his. I have the same cab and use dual CL 80's.

Personally I would go with a pair of greenbacks. Those are my Favorite speakers. I have a Marshall 4 12" loaded with Greenback's(1960 AX). It absolutely changed the way my amp sounded.... for the better. I have a Komet 60. When I first bought it Scott(Wattage) loaned me a Peavey 4 12 that had the Shefeild 1290's in it(there version of the 12" 75W Celestion). The amp STILL sounded amazing, but after speaking with the people at Komet they recommended Greenbacks. When I bought the cabinet it absolutely made my amps sound so much better. Natural tube/speaker break up and they respond to mu touch incredibly well.

The V30's are more for metal man

I'd have AT LEAST one greenback in there (or Warehouse Green Beret / Weber 1225 ceramic). The G12H30 is a balanced speaker, good for rock/blues/hard rock

by the way you're one lucky bastard getting that speaker for free. I'm jelly.

I don't know that I am lucky and my parentage is not up for debate but the members are what make this easily the best user group forum on the internet.

g12h is a safe bet for wanting creamy and also able to do heavy if a 60 watt cab is enough for your amp. if 60 watts is not enough go vintage 30. arguably there are many better speaker than the vintage 30 for many styles. the fact remain though that it is a versitle speaker that works with almost any amp. also i suggest a eq pedal or a good boost/overdrive for when you want the amp to tighten up for heavy tones.

Since the amp is nicked off of another Matchless do what Matchless does...one H30 and one Greenback.

Mark and Phil put in the work a long time ago to find the best speaker matches for their amps, no need to stop now...
