Average DC Resistance of the Custom 8?

I brought my Custom Custom, which I just got back from Duncan for a Custom 8 mag swap, brought it to the guy who does all my work, and he put the meter on it... It read 14.85k. That doesn't sound right, shouldn't the A8 mag increase that by a substantial amount? I believe I was given rewind instead (previous thread I mentioned the pickup had a cracked bobbin). The tech opened a new Custom Custom to do a comparison, and the new pickup was actually at 15.01k. Or is the winding itself playing a part, because on the tone chart the Custom Custom is actually rated about the same, at 14.4, as the Custom, at 14.1, but it's my understanding that the Custom by default SHOULD have a higher output since it has a ceramic magnet.

A mag swap isn't going to change a pickup's DC resistance. Kiloohms and output are two different stories.

Re: Average DC Resistance of the Custom 8?

DC Resistance is not the same as output. A more powerful magnet will give you more output but resistance will be the same because it is a characteristic of the wire (not the magnet).

Re: Average DC Resistance of the Custom 8?

Yep, stop focusing on the DC resistance. It does NOT indicate the output of the pickup. In fact, it doesn't tell you much at all...

Check out this recent thread: LINK

Re: Average DC Resistance of the Custom 8?

Cool, thanks for clearing it up... Wish they would stop using this number to indicate output, it confuses a lot of people.

Re: Average DC Resistance of the Custom 8?

Your pickup is perfectly fine. A small tolerance is always there. Pickup manufacturers go for a consistency in sound when making pickups and not in DC resistance.

Re: Average DC Resistance of the Custom 8?

Dc resistance pretty much only tells you how many turns of copper wire there are. Granted more turns equals more output, but there are other variables to consider in a pickups design that contribute to output. Magnets are one, polepieces too, etc...

Re: Average DC Resistance of the Custom 8?

Wire gauge will certainly change the number of turns at the same DCR but coil geometry won't. 15k worth of 43 is (more or less*) 15k worth of 43, regardless of the coil shape. Will the geometry affect the tone? You bet. But the number of turns at the same DCR and gauge won't change.

*(Controlling for diameter tolerances, temperature, excess tension, etc, of course)

Gotta explain myself before I look stupid. :censored::notworthy:flowers1:

the number of turns at the same DCR and gauge won't change.

Consider this: Let's assume 15k worth of awg43 makes a given length of wire. This given length of wire can make a lot of tiny loops around a small bobbin (let's say half a rails) or fewer loops of a larger area around a bigger bobbin (like a 7 string bass soapbar uh, or something). Righty-O?

Re: Average DC Resistance of the Custom 8?

Resistance varies with the temp; the warmer it is, the higher a PU will read. That's one reason you may see resistance measurements all over the map for a PU model.
