AWESOME VIDEO CLIPS ! U.F.O. w/t Uli & Michael

Re: AWESOME VIDEO CLIPS ! U.F.O. w/t Uli & Michael

Michael Schenker was supposed to play a show at the Ventura Theatre,
which is just a short distance down the road (both DeadSkinSlayer3 and
Ronny North played there in the last few weeks), but I see on the
TicketMaster site that the show has been cancelled--hope everything's all
right with him!

By the way, I totally agree with the earlier suggestions with regard to
getting a copy of UFO's live "Strangers In The Night"-- the soloing and
songs are awesome!

For you old-timers who also grew up with that album--does it sound like
the solos were added/overdubbed afterward? I've listened to it quite a few
times over the last couple of decades, but didn't think about it until I read
some of the reviews on Amazon.com--someone pointed out that some of
the cuts (i.e. "Mother Mary") had the guitar leads dubbed in the studio.
What do you think?

Also, if you're not familiar with Uli Roth's old stuff, check out a solo from
one of his albums from 1981 (post-Scorpions). You can tell Yngwie got
some of his influences from him, although Roth incorporates a lot more
melodic stuff, IMO--but can still shred!

Another solo from the period he was in Scorpions (1977) that foreshadowed
the neoclassical fusion style that took off a few years later--who else was
playing stuff like this?!?:

If anything on that album is a overdub it's "natural thing"...in fact fairly obvious...

However...Mike was already out the band before that thing was even released (Strangers in the Night)...he quit (i.e. disappeared for the umpteenth and final time) during the middle of that tour...if it was overdubbed it was from another show they recorded...not a studio overdub.

Paul Chapman finished out the USA tour (and was mentioned in the liner notes of SITN as their guitar player). Check out the bootleg "Parkers Birthday" from the TX show on that tour...UGHHHHH....just horrid...Chapman was absolutely attrocious and clearly didn't know the newer material well at all (granted, he was flown in one day, touring the next)...Phil couldn't hit a note to save his life.

Michael has said he never understood why that album is regarded as his benchmark for playing, and I agree...the big strength of SITN is not just michaels playing but capturing the WHOLE BAND clicking...Phil is ON...Paul Raymond is ON (guitars, keyboards and vocals) Pete and Andy always seemed to be on...Paul, Phil and Michael were hit or miss any given concert thanks to the excesses of the R&R lifestyle.

One Night at Budokan (MSG) IMO, is by far a better live album (no dubs either)..Mike at his absolute prime, and the tightest MSG lineup ever. Barden still had his voice...Cozy Powell showing why he was quite possibly the best unsung rock drummer there ever was, Chris Glen finally getting "solid", and Paul Raymond again, was "on" in every aspect (keyboards, vocals, guitars).

Well said, Jeff, and I think the fact that the song selection on that album was a pretty good "best of" helped make that album the classic that it is.

Oh yeah, and having watched it a few more times, the "Too Hot to Handle" DVD is a must for any UFO/Schenker fan. It's not perfect but when it is good it is fantastic.
