Saw a couple of these on CL lately and thought they seemed rather cool. The amp reminds me of a Marshall 1974, but a few needed features such as a Master volume and Reverb. I came really close to pulling the trigger today, but I decided I like my Fender Super Sonic 60 combo much better. I did a little digging, and from what I can tell, the amps were originally badged as AXL in 2008, but in early 2009, VHT lost is naming license and the folks (for better or worse, you decide) from AXL picked up the license and re-branded the AXL amps as VHT Classic Series.. Now VHT does have a Standard Series which rather closely resembles the Marshall 1974 (VHT Standard 18), Marshall 1962 (VHT Standard 36), and a Fender Tweed Deluxe 5E3 (VHT Standard 12). These new reincarnations are USA made, hand-wired recreations of those classic amps from yesteryear. Despite the rather low cost of the Chinese made VHT Medway Special 18 (guy was down to $275), I chose not to buy it. I'd rather have the hand wired VHT Standard 18 with the master volume. I had a Marshal 1974 clone and miss it terribly. But no one seems to have noticed a Marshall 1974 clone, made in the USA, 1x12 with Celestion Greenback for under $1,000 and I am wondering why? Has anyone else tried these AXL/VHT amps and given them a fair shake despite ether series that are made in China or USA ? I know people rave about the VHT Special 6 or Special 6 Ultra, plus the 20/40. I think this is arguably the best place on the web to ask...
