Backwards stuff mixed into songs - WTF?

OK, I've watched about 4 making-of album documentaries and they all had songs where there was a backwards riff or solo mixed into a song - you can't hardly tell it's there until they point it out, and when they're at the board and cut it out, you can tell it's gone and sounds a bit hollow.

What's the deal here? In what realm would you say "this part needs to have something played backwards mixed with it"?

Has anyone tried this?

I can understand maybe one act doing it for kicks, but it would seem to be a pretty common studio trick.

Can anyone elaborate on this?

They weren't creating a Pre- echo effect , were they?

Re: Backwards stuff mixed into songs - WTF?

It may be a passing phase like autotune and many other stupid novelties, or it may be, or become, a standard thing. Either way, it's just another sound and technique, not much different to adding some string washes or synth pads or whatever for some extra ambience.

The trouble is, as always, that anytime someone does something slightly new or interesting, the masses can't just leave it alone, they all have to jump on the bandwagon and ram these things down everyones' throats until they choke on it. Kinda like the electric guitar really. Innovators and innovation is great, but the imitators usually seem to take it beyond the saturation point. I'm sure studio guys are just as bad with trend-following as everybody else.

You're being facetious right now, correct?

I'm curious to know what it does. I know nothing about recording at all. Sounds interesting.
