bad cat cougar amps?

Re: bad cat cougar amps?

ha! dunno. never seen one but a 50w 1x12 channel switcher with reverb for $429 shipped

Re: bad cat cougar amps?

They're not built by Bad Cat. Designed and built by Hanser, and wholly Chinese made. Warranty repairs handled by Hanser.

Re: bad cat cougar amps?

i knew they were overseas made. initially they had tons of complaints about warranty work but then i heard they got better. im not really worried about that since i'd just fix it if it broken, im wondering how they sound. for that amount of money i might just buy one and see if its any good

Re: bad cat cougar amps?

I've been itching to grab the Cougar 50 head, because it's a third of the regular price. My rational brain is telling me no more amps, but my jonesing side says "do it, do it, do it."

The only one I've tried in a store was the 5W combo, and it actually sounded really good. I think the best one may be the 15W combo, as far as non master type EL-84 tone.

The 50 watters have a great clean channel and a highgain channel. It doesn't offer a plethora of midgain tones, just clean and gain. Still cool for $429 though. This sale has been going for a week, and I think it could end any day now. If you're going to do it, pull the trigger now.

Also, check out Bugera. They're practically giving them away. You can get a 150W plexi clone for $229!!!! For the price of a pedal, you can get a plexi knockoff! Not to mention all the other Bugera knockoffs like Matchless, Mesa, 5150, JCM900, etc.

Re: bad cat cougar amps?

Most of the reviewers thought it was a good deal at $1300
Sale price is hard to pass up

I want one
But like Gearjoneser
I really don't need another amp

Re: bad cat cougar amps?

i did it. be here in a few days, of course ill be travelling so wont be around to try it till next weekend. we shall see, for $430 shipped even if it sucks ill rip out the board and build something in the box with the trannys

Re: bad cat cougar amps?

off topic, but i tried my first bad cat today. it was called a bad cat classic. powered by two 6v6s and a tube rectifier. Volume, tone and reverb knobs. It was pretty damn nice. Kind of like a deluxe reverb but more solid. I liked it a lot. Probably got nothing in common with the ones this thread is about tho...

My Jonesing side won. For $429, I had to add this to the stable.

Re: bad cat cougar amps?

Mine just arrived, and it looks even better in person. This is definitely a $1200 quality amp, and an absolute steal for $429. I can't wait to run it through it's paces tonight.

I noticed the Cougar 50 combo sold out yesterday, so if any of you want one of these, DO NOT WAIT another second.....just pull the trigger now. The head will probably only last today or tomorrow on Musiciansfriend, then they'll be gone.

Re: bad cat cougar amps?

OMG. This amp is about twice as good as I even thought it would be. I put it on my Bogner 412 cab, played it on the clean channel for awhile, and was amazed....it also has spring reverb, not digital reverb. The breakup is really nice, and it's rotary tone control is all anyone would need. edit - the regular tone controls and presence also effect the clean channel.

But then, I switched over to the gain channel and realized it's one of the best sounding highgain amps you can buy at any price. It's up there with Bogner, Diezel, and any other $2000+ highgain amp. There's NO lack of gain, and the bottom end is tight. There's tons of control over the mids and highs, but most importantly, the tone of the amp is right where it should be.
If you play rock and metal, this amp slays. If you're looking for midgain, you'd be best off putting an OD in front of the clean channel. The OD channel is more like the hot channel on most good rock/metal amps. Absolutely great though. Keep in mind, I've owned over 80 guitar amps, and have a collection of my favorites. This one is right up there with my Bogner XTC. It'll kill just about any other channel switching amp out there at high volume and bedroom volume.

For $429, with supplies dwindling, do not even waste another minute if you're in the market for a great rock and metal amp. This is tone that most people pay over $2000 for, and it's being given away for no apparent reason. I think Bad Cat realizes that a Chinese line hurts their American line, and may be discontinuing it. Don't snooze on this one! If you wait even one day, they'll be gone. The combos are gone already.

Can't wait to get your feed back on this amp. I have heard nothing but good things from others.

If you're considering buying one, just put it on your credit card. You could sell something to recoup the money. I don't see these Cougar heads staying available much longer.

Re: bad cat cougar amps?

I was curious about whether Bad Cat was discontinuing the line, and found out that US Bad Cat was sold about a year ago, and that the Chinese line was a straggling contract from the original ownership and Hanser. The new owner hasn't renewed the contract with Hanser, and probably thinks it's not good for US Bad Cat sales. Essentially, the new ownership is ending the Cougar line so it doesn't conflict with the regular US Bad Cat brand.

The Chinese Bad Cat amps were actually designed by a great amp builder, James Brown, who designed the Peavey 5150 and other great amps, and then that design was perfected by James Heindreich of Bad Cat US. He upped the specs of some smaller components.

That's why these Bad Cats are way different than US ones. James Brown is more of a modern amp builder, and Heindreich is all old school.......but he no longer owns Bad Cat.
