Bad Monkey Bypass

How many people have noticed a drop in dynamics with the Bad Monkey?

I always hear people talk about it and I want to know what you guys think.

Re: Bad Monkey Bypass

Yeah, I think that's because it's best used for a solo boost. When used in front of a clean tube amp it's very bassy and compressed, which is idea for a thick lead boost.

When you say "dynamics" do you mean the different settings? Or the actual dynamics of while you play? The actual dynamic range of the pedal is pretty good, when you tweak the knobs.

Re: Bad Monkey Bypass

I own a Bad Monkey and I'm not talking about when the pedal is on (then it sounds great) but when it is off IMHO it seems to lose dynamics.

Re: Bad Monkey Bypass

The bad monkey is not an expensive pedal, so the manufacturer probably used a cheaper and probably not so good buffer in the pedal that sucks tone when it's off compared to higher end more expensive pedals. That does't mean it's bad in any ways.
You just get what you pay for.

In your case: stop worrying about small details and play the damn guitar allright! You are 17 years old man! Make up your priorities and don't become a tone snob because it will hold you back as a player. ;) Trust me. Just get it if you want it and concentrate on your playing if you want to become a guitargod.
If you want the good stuff that will please even the most dedicated tone guru you will have to pay a lot of money for it.

just my 2 cents.

Re: Bad Monkey Bypass

I guess I'm spoiled with the pedals I currently have, but I definitely noticed a subtle "blanket over the speakers" effect in bypass when I demo'd a Monkey last month.

It's not so bad that I would tell people to stay away from the thing, but it's certainly not ideal.

Re: Bad Monkey Bypass

I only noticed a problem when I put it inline right before a Digitech Screaming Blues which is another cheap Digitech pedal..... The Hard Wire CM-2 is similar sounding (I still like the Monkey better) but the CM-2 has true bypass.... Or you can just get a true bypass loop pedal... I think Rocktron makes one for a single loop bypass and a lot less money and a full midi solution.
