bad neck angle

i think my les paul studio's neck angle has been cut wrong... it's too steep, causing me to raise the bridge which makes playing kind of uncomfortable... is there a way to resolve this? or is it totally permanent... :yell:

Somehow, I just knew the title of this thread was in reference to a Gibson guitar. Sometimes I think those guys could screw up a free lunch.

The first thing to do is to make sure all the other aspects of your setup are correct. Make sure the truss rod is properly adjusted, the nut is cut right, and the action is set low, but not too low. If you still have this problem, take it to a good luthier and get his opinion. An improper neck angle on a set neck electric can be fixed, but it is a very expensive and involved repair.

A common problem with the "new" Les Pauls is what you speak of. You have to raise the Stop back pretty high to eliminate the strings rubbing against the bridge which will cause them to break to frequently. This will kill some of the sustain the a Les Paul normally has. An easy fix is to wrap the strings around the stop bar. In other words put the string in thru the front of the stop bar, and then wrap it around the top of it. This will raise the string up a sufficent amount to eliminate it hitting the bridge. The plus side to this is the added string length will give the feeling of a lighter gauge string. Try it this should work fine as long as you don't mind wrapping the strings around the stop!

where's the nut? or what is it rather...

If you don't know, this is not something I'd try doing yourself. The nut is the part where the strings break over the fretboard. Take it to a tech and get his opinion. It could be that the setup is just off, and you're mistaking a poor setup for a bad neck angle.

ah... i don't think i can trust the guitarcenter guy though... im' terrified that he might scratch my guitar up a bit... i've heard some stories of people scratching guitars up and then blaming the owner for it. i really need a setup. never got one since i bought it.

In that case, it might not be a bad neck angle, just a truss rod issue. I would advise finding a good tech in your area and letting him set it up for you. Gibsons can sometimes have improperly set necks, but chances are it's just in need of a setup.
