bad tech! please help

I had a tech at my local guitar store install a pair of 59's in my PRS Hollowbody II. When I showed up to get my guitar, he said that he thought both pickups were for the same position so he had to install the bridge position pickup much closer to the strings. I then pointed out the small "b" and "n" on each pickup's box, telling him that they were, in fact, different pickups. He admitted that I was right, but he then told me that they are installed correctly anyway. But the way I see it...how could he possibly know! So I think he installed the neck pickup in the bridge and that is why it is so close to the strings. So I need to go to someone else and get this resolved. How can I know for sure which pickups is which, now that they are out of the boxes? Has anyone ever had this happen? ahhhhh!

Re: bad tech! please help

If they are reversed the pickup in the neck position will be much louder than the one in the bridge position when both are adjusted the same distance from the strings. Is that the case? If not, you may be fine. Lew

Lew, right now the volumes are fine, but the bridge pickup is set really really close to the strings. When he installed them he thought that they were both neck pickups.

When you hold the strings down at the highest fret, the bobbins should be roughly 1/8" away from the underside of the strings. A little closer or a little further is OK too...comes down to personal taste. But if that's the way your guitar is set up and the volumes seem balanced, it sounds like you are OK. If you want to know for sure, remove one pickup and just see what the model number is. A neck will be a 59n. A bridge will be a 59b. Lew

Also, even with the neck and bridge models installed correctly, it is not unusual to adjust the pickups so that the bridge pickup is closer to the strings than the neck pickup is. I have my bridge Seth closer to the strings than the neck Seth.

Thanks everyone. I think im going to bring it to a different tech and have him look at the pickup labels.
