Bad Tone From My Amp... Color With A Pedal?

I've notice that when i turn my amp (a second hand Laney that was a rental at one point) up enough to hear it over the drums, the tone is very screamy/high pitch/ear bleedingly spiky. Especially when i use the built in overdrive. I've been looking at pedals, mainly the keeley ds-1. Would this be able to color my tone, perhaps eliminating this punch in the eardrum effect?

Have you considered using an EQ in the amps FX loop to take some of the high end out of the sound?

That may work better than changing the sound completely with an OD pedal.

Just an idea :)

interesting. I dont understand the whole fx loop thing though. i know the rough idea of it, that it connects behind the amp or whatever (at least on mine) but why is it different than having effects in the middle of your guitar and amp?

The effects loop lets you adjust the tone after the preamp, so say your preamp settings aren't doing it for you an eq after it before the power stage can further help adjust it.

Have you tried the duct tape over the middle of the speaker yet either?

Is is a tube Laney? If so, you might need some new preamp tubes, new power tubes wouldn't hurt either if you haven't replaced them.

What are you amp settings? I jammed with a drummer once and he could barely hear me because (in my younger days) I had my treble all the way up and my mids way back.

Maybe try new speakers or an EQ pedal after trying different setting (like previously suggested). Is it tube or a solid state laney?

How about turning down the treble/presence and backing off the mids a little?

I agree, especially the preamp tubes. Speakers can be expensive, so that would be the last thing I would do. I think it would be best to get that amp sounding right before you add a pedal to it. No sense in polishing a turd.
