Barber DirectDrive... what else ? (OD/fX-related... check it out damn freaks!)

Hey dudes...

I'm currently owning a Barber Direct Drive as my main rythm overdrive. My amp is a Laney GH50L, which has some very nice clean capabilities as well as outstanding drive channels, IMHO.

The problem is that my Barber DD sounds a tad too compressed, and lack some clarity. I'm looking for an OD/Dist that will be more open-sounding. Think 70's Gilmour, Alex Lifeson (Rush) and co. Not too modern.

Some suggestions ?

Maybe try either the Direct Drive SS or the new Barber pedal, the LTD. The LTD has less gain (it goes up to sort of cranked tweed territory) but is clearer and less compressed than the DD (IMHO).

I'm not really bothered by the DD compression, so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about.

I understand how you feel. Got BBDD, Fulltone FullDrive 2 and a mesa boogie v-twin. Frankly speaking, lately I started detesting them exactly for the reason you point at. Instead cranking my blues jr. produces way better results (for my ears).

I understand how you feel. Got BBDD, Fulltone FullDrive 2 and a mesa boogie v-twin. Frankly speaking, lately I started detesting them exactly for the reason you point at. Instead cranking my blues jr. produces way better results (for my ears).

Check out the Barber LTD, it sounds like it's exactly what you are looking for. I use the DDSS and I love it. Can't go wrong with Baber pedals!!

I know I was kinda harsh. Yet nowadays I keep finding myself losing those in my chain. The guitar and the amp, that's about it!

^Yeah same here, but it is loud and I am not the biggest fan of attenuators, they always compress just that little too much for a natural sound.
But I like a good overdrive in a sensitive amp, the tone can be quite good.
But my overdrives are not the usual 9v low headroom pedals, so I pretty much get the sound I want, well it is good enough for both recording and gigs.
But nothing really beats a wideopen Plexi :laugh2: :burnout:
