So, you're searching for something cool for cheap... preferably where the seller doesn't realize what they got.

What catches your eye? Share the skillz!

Moi:
*ratty guitar-shaped hardcases with yellow felt : 70s japan content!
*bolt-on Les Pauls with weird names : google-worthy, high chance of japan... says Steel Adjustible Neck? Def japan
*F serials on ibanez : fujigen...alas often missing as they're on stickers, in that case look if the TUNERS say "japan"
*yellowed pup covers on cheapie squier - take a closer look

Well built but obscure USA guitars. Examples are USA Washburns, Robins, Hamers higher end Peavies or Carvins.
Diamonds in the rough. Examples are guitars with screwed up Floyds or necks out of adjustment that are unplable but otherwise intact. Bought an early USA Washburn MG 104 that was filthy and badly out of set up for $160 OTD at a pawn shop. Serial number for this first year of production MG was get this 008 and the guitar was intact!! Absolute MONSTER player now BTW!!

If the break isn't through the faceplate, a Gibson with a broken headstock can be a super bargain.

It takes a lot of patience, but small town pawn shops can be incredible... Picked up my 77 musicman Hd130 for 1/2 of what they sell because it had been sitting there a long time.

Of course, you have to know market value and a clear understanding of what maybe broken and how much to fix.

I mostly find obscure pedals from times gone by for cheap. I got this bad boy for $15 and free shipping:

It's a pretty solid dirt pedal, even without taking the price into account.

Godin guitars can be had used for a song, and are usually very well made great playing instruments.

I always look around for circa 1990 german made shadow super strats. They are relatively unknown yet the hardware is all top quality and you can score them for a decent price.

I'll throw in G&L, too. They are just so good. I've bought many USA-made Legacys for far less than a comparable Fender. And MII and MIK Tribute imports just kill Fender's budget models.

Prices, though, have started to rise as more and more people become aware of the brand's value.
