Baritone strings

I would like to set one of my guitars up in Drop A. Some bands and songs I really like that use this tuning, so I would like to learn some of there songs. Anyway I tried 0.012-0.060 and the 0.060 was like spaghetti. I was thinking of trying a 0.013-0.068 or 0.072 baritone set. Anybody ever use these on a 24 5/8 scale guitar ? will they fit ? any problems I should be aware of ?

Re: Baritone strings

I've used 72s for A strings.. they take some getting used to.

I run 52s and 56s in Open B, try the 60 for a week or so first.

Re: Baritone strings

I've been running a .059 for my low C on my explorer in C standard, and i find its pretty good.

Break angle is important for keeping tension on low tunings, if you have a tailpiece, lower it all the way, it might help.

I've also used a 13-68 baritone set on a ltd explorer for A# standard, it worked alright, but be prepared to cut the nut and saddles to fit the strings.

There are also programs you can get that can change the whole pitch of songs, so that you can play it without having to tune down. They work pretty well from my experience!

Re: Baritone strings

Any standard pack of baritone strings should work fine for Drop A. It's like Drop D for baritone guitars.

Because of their extended scale, baritones retain more tension at lower tunings, so it's all about how much tension you want, really.

I've seen baritones in as low as drop E. (Why not buy a bass at that point?) :-|
