basic cheap way of recording???

hi all,

it is getting to the point where i require to have a way of recording my own playing for band purposes, etc and What's a good cheap way of doing it? cause i am sick of putting my laptop in front of an amp hitting record and using audacity, cause it isn't the best of doing it....

I have been looking at the line six pod/ pocket pod, but i wondered if there are more computer friendly ways which are cheaper???

sure, but i think you need someone independent doing that for you. serious.
it imo doesn't have to be a professional, but a seperate brain, eg friend
supporting your band.
we intensly tried recording on our own in my previous band. despite the
tools were really cool (mics for around 4k euro (6 mics for the drums
alone etc), a yamaha firewire mixer, notebook+audacy) and our bandleader knew all
that stuff well, he always sucked at playin, due to having had to much things in his
head at the same time. furthermore his way of reworking it afterwards wasn't absolutely
not my beer. an outsider would imo always do that better.
despite playing elsewhere meanwhile, i'm convinced using a smaller mobile
device, such as a zoom h2 for rehersal. sound quality is good enough to
evaluate band progress, capture solo ideas or take it to a club gig.
as already written: for a cd, i suggest aquiring help.

Baltar^^ If it was intended to be a pro recording, why would you use Audacity? You can't use any realtime tools, it's less than basic and the built in effects are quite terrible. Even if you set it up to use outboard, you don't get their intended interfaces and you can't adjust in realtime.

i am on about bedroom recording of riffs and backing chords as an aid to practice before band practice and also to have a reference point on how our songs go, wo if we make mistakes we can double check the recording im not wanting to make a cd......

JJ, i hear ya, and i just remembered i have the emulated output from the HT5 so I could use this??? but would i be better off having a seperate USB soundcard to plug it all into and stuff?

Not too sure mate, maybe Google that.
Or see if your computer has an RCA line in, you may be able to get a signal that way.
If your computer has Realtek in it you should be able to do some basic quick recordings that way once you get the signal in.

Open your control panel and check through audio.

It's a laptop so i will go through control panel, I know i have a microphone input but i'll have a play see what i can do

There is probably a smartphone app that would do the job. Quick, spontaneous, portable, convenient.

A Pod + Reaper would be your cheapest and simplest option for the majority of your needs. Getting the right model will take care of Guitar, Bass, Vox, and you can use USB midi for keyboards.

I don't have that kind of smartphone... otherwise would have gone straight for the Irig.

I have a toneport UX1 that has served me well. That plus reaper. I just got a POD Studio UX2 so if you want the UX1 I can sell it cheap.

Yeap. a POD Studio UX and Reaper, is the best and cheapest.
I have a bunch of stuff recorded in Sonar or I would move to Reaper. I also use an old Line6 Guitar Port and it works great.
