Basic recording studuio cost?

My gf is interested in audio stuff and thought it would be cool to setup a basic studio in the future so she could mess around with the younger bands to get some experience.

My question is, how much does everything cost and what would i need? Say i have a computer that is powerful enough to do it, what does it take $$$ and equpment wise to start recording a band?

Re: Basic recording studuio cost?

Well i'd assume if I do this in a year or two I'd probably limit myself to around $4000 if possible? Is that too low?

8 track? what year is this?
build an audio only computer, and have as many tracks as you want. decide if she wants a mobile studio- a laptop, firewire audio interface, and a few mics will easily be under $4k and allow you to record bands at gigs. If you want to build a studio space, well, it will cost a lot more.
check out musicxpc.com for computer ideas.

I already have a $1500 computer that is more than powerful enough for audio, so that isn't needed in the cost.

Dual core
2GB ram
320GBx3 in raid 5

Well,

Constructing a decent sounding live room that can accomodate a whole band tracking at once, will keep outside noise (like planes & trains) out and inside noise (loud guitars & drums) inside...

That'll set 'ya back at least $10,000 in raw construction materials even if you do all the work yourself.

You'll still need to build a decent sounding control room after that...another few grand there and that's NOT EVEN considering gear, electricity...all that stuff.

$4000 total?!??

Phbbbt.

I've got WAY more then that invested in misc. crap like cabling & mic stands.

Having a fancy dancy computer is the LEAST of it.

Besides, sticking a fancy dancy computer & some other gear into the spare room of your crib mean that you have "a studio."

All it means is you've got a spare room with a bunch of gear.

My best advice, find a local studio and land an internship there. Use their stuff and learn from them...see if you're REALLY into before investing the money.

Don't be another one of those people that drops $15,000+ on gear and charges $15 an hour to work out of some lo-fi enviornment just to sell it all on Craigslist a year later when 'ya can't keep up with the payments.

+1 to everything Moose said.

It's a slippery slope, and a damned expensive one.
