You really can't beat SX if you want something dirt cheap that still plays well. They definitely beat the pants off of current production Squiers and they give MIM's a run for their money. I'd get the P+J model for the most versatility.

For R&B a P-Bass can't be beat.

I played a friend's old Peavey USA P-Bass (not sure on the model) and it sounds great with the stock pickup. :burnout:

A Precision or a Jazz bass or a mix of them (P/J) is great for that and is also versatile in general

P-bass + flatwound strings. A Mexican P-bass will work great, especially with one of the older styled Duncans in it.

Lou, check Ebay for a Peavey T-40. They are some of the best basses ever made in my opinion. They sound great, play great, and even the stock pickups are worth keeping. They are popular with session players, as they have a very cool sound to them. They are a bit heavy, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem. They usually go for around $200 or so on Ebay, I would get one of those before I would even consider a cheap Squire or some other junk bass.

A mexican made Jazz or P bass would be a good investment. The sound like the real deal, and they play pretty well. It will last him a few years before he starts buggin you for a "new" Bass. :) :burnout:
