bass help?

I'm helping my bass player get a new rig. I found him a used ampeg SVT3-Pro head and I'm going to the store tomorrow to go check it out.

Would it be better to get two cheaper 4x10 cabs to go with it, or one nicer 4x10?

They have some used hartke 4x10 transporter cabs there, but I've heard mixed things about them.

Re: bass help?

the 3pro is a killer head, one of my favorites actually. the tube gain control is very nice (controls the voltage to a pair of tubes, at low voltage you get a response similar to an old svt, all the way up and you get a very quick response. youll hear the difference in the attack and the bloom of the note)

as far as a cab, id get one good cab over two ok ones any day. hartke has never really been my thing, not bad gear but not a sound that i like all that much.
swr goliath or ampeg hlf cabs is what i would recomend

Re: bass help?

I've used a Mesa Boogie Diesel 4 x 10 cab, and the sound was thunderous. Very tight and focused, with great attack characteristics. Heavy as hell tho.

Re: bass help?

depends on the price difference between good and bad cabs... replacing a speaker at a time could get you 2 nice 4x10's without feeling too bad a pinch on the wallet...

depends on the quality of the old ones as well..
