Bass info needed.

Went to a local hock shop today.
This place is always obscenely overpriced on their guitars. They have a bass there that could be awesome. Its Fender. I dont recall the model name but here's the deal with it.
Its Japanese built. It has both the jazz and p bass pups. It looks like the bass Duff used to play. Its black, black neck and headstock. Vol knob, tone knob and a toggle. It has a tiny bit of fret wear, and has a good bit of chips. some are thru the paint.
A couple chips or on the back of the neck and a few are on the side of the neck up near where the fret board/neck meet. its a player guitar but not abused. the Bridge has a good bit of scratches too.

The thing is a great player tho! It wasnt in tune, so that made the strings a bit more slinky than Im sure it should be. Im gonn go back with a tuner and tune it and gve it a work out. I need to know what a realistic price would be for it. ?? They have it "on sale" right now and its marked at $599, whereas they were asking $699 for it. It comes with a gig bag. Since its japanese made, Im sure its good, plus it plays and feels good. Im thinking a realistic price should be maybe $399 or less...??

What do you think? This a good axe? (Im guessing yeah)
What would be a realistic price??
Thanks!!

Re: Bass info needed.

Sounds like it's a MIJ Fender Jazz Bass Special because of the black painted neck.
Really good basses. Those where quite popular back in the early-mid '00s because of the bang for the buck factor and had a reputation of being solid performers.
IMO $599 is a lot of money for it. I remember those used to go for $300 to $350 depending on condition and smoked the Fender MIM basses of those days.

Re: Bass info needed.

yeah more than likely a MiJ PJ special, that being said people can easily ask for MiJ basses and guitars 1k$.

But from what you described, you might be able to get a decent deal, just make sure, there is no neck joint stress , look to see if it might have been painted , also check the head stock for stress cracks could hurt tune stability and of of course look for neck warpage , last make sure you really want it.
( check the serial number too)

Nothing worse than your mind tricking you into something 2 days later your like i did what now? Also post pics if you get it!!!!

Re: Bass info needed.

Good instrument. Silly price. Good basis for modification. (Better pickups. Vol, vol, tone controls, remove selector switch.)

Re: Bass info needed.

It depends heavily on the year or by extension on the serial number, of course. The earliest SQ, JV and later E series guitars and basses are highly regarded.

Some of the later stuff is questionable, e.g. using basswood.

Pretty much all of them have bad pickups and the hardware can be sub-par.

In general there is a problem with bulletproof paint syndrome with MIJ Fenders. If your personal beliefs include that thick paint dampens the guitar you might want to look elsewhere.

I would not buy any that have non-vintage layout, aka either Jazz or Precision bass but not a mix thereof.

Re: Bass info needed.

Good guitar, but too much money. I'd pass. Chronically overpriced shops deserve no one's money.

Re: Bass info needed.

I'd start haggling @ $300 out the door.
"Mebbe" go up to $400 if it's worth it to you...

Tell them it needs strings & a HSC,there's another $100 or so right there.

Re: Bass info needed.

If it's beat to hell then I wouldn't pay no more that $200-$250 for it. Those basses can be found quite frequently on Ebay for $300 in good condition.

Re: Bass info needed.

thanks ya'll! Ill see if they swing for a low price. If not Ill leave it. This shop is normally quite Crazy on their pricing, but maybe they have lightened up some. I havent gone in there in years for that reason.
