hi

i own two bass with jazz pickup on 'em (fender p-bass lyte and yamaha rbx755a) and with those 2 bass's , i got a lot of noise comming from those jazz pickup.

so i would like to know if it exist any remplacement pickup in the sigle coil format that dont noise at all when run in solo.( i need quiet pickup for recording)

if yes , then which pickup should i put on those bass ? (i would like to keep the fender P-pickup)

if no , then i gonna have to cut both bass to put humbucker on 'em ,i dont really want to cut 'em but got no choice :(

Re: bass jazz single coil question

You don't need to cut up your bass to put humbuckers in them. If your P-Bass pickups hum a lot, there might be a problem there, because the those are two separate pickups wired together to cancel hum. Could be a wiring issue. The Jazz pickups don't surprise me, because they're single coils.

Duncan makes the STK-J1 Classic Stack for Jazz Bass, for hum-free, vintage Jazz Bass tone that fits right into your Jazz Bass, no routing required. He also makes a Hot Stack, for a slightly-hotter-than-vintage tone without any hum. Duncan also makes the Vintage for P-Bass, the Hot for P-Bass, and the Quarter Pound for P-Bass, which has big, 1/4" magnets that give it a big, full, punchy tone.

Duncan pickups and Fender pickups won't work properly together. I can't explain the reason for that very well. It's got something to do with the magnets. Hopefully someone else will come along that could explain this to you. I hope you find something you like.

If you really want to play it safe, Fender makes Vintage Noiseless Jazz Bass pickups. Same as the Duncan Jazz Bass pickups, they fit right into your Jazz Bass without the need for any modifications to your guitar, and they produce vintage Jazz Bass tone, and kill the hum.

I hope that helps.

Re: bass jazz single coil question

thanks sufferinrewind for your quick answer and sorry if my post was not clear

in my fender , the p-pickup is ok and it dont noise at all ,thats why i want just to change the jazz single coil on my fender and my yamaha

on both bass , when i switch the pickup selector on the jazz pickup in solo , both bass give me lot of noise in every situation from recording in console or jammming with band.

so if i follow what you said , i can put 2 Hot Stack jazz pickup on my yamaha
(hot stack because im not really into vintage sound) and maybe i will have to change the electronic in it , but at least the pickup will fit in my yamaha rbx755a slot

for the fender i think i will keep it like it is right now because the p-pickup in it sound great ,thats why i said i dont want to change it , but maybe later i will change the jazz pickup in it
if i found a solution to keep the fender active electronics and the passive p-bass pickup and only adding a new jazz hum free ,maybe fender Vintage Noiseless Jazz Bass if it fit with the electronics

so sufferinrewind , you said that seymour do pickup hum free , my question is do hum free mean that the jazz pickup gonna be quiet has my p-pickup on my fender

i will wait to see what you or somebody else got to say about this

thank you

Re: bass jazz single coil question

Actually, any of the Duncan Jazz Bass pickups will be humcancelling if used as a set. So you'd need a bridge model and neck model. If both are being used together at the same time they will be humcancelling. You could go with Duncan Vintage Jazz, Hot Jazz or Quarter Pound Jazz sets. Lew

Re: bass jazz single coil question

well lewguitar thats the reason why i started this tread , cause i know that jazz pickup in series are quiet , my concern is more when they run in solo because the sound is not the same and i need sometimes only the bridge , sometimes the neck and sometimes both
but i need to know if it exist in this world a single coil that is quiet when run in solo

if the answer is no they can't run solo, then i gonna have to swich for humbucker and its not really the same job as just changing jazz coil

the sound of my bass's are good ,my concern is not changing pickup for better sound , its only a noise issues , i want to throw noise out for recording , i need a crystal clean sound in any position on the pickup selector

changing only 2 jazz pickup is easy , but changing for humbucker is another game

changing single coil 200$ changing fro humbucker 400$ + and for the rest i dont have visa :)

Re: bass jazz single coil question

Well, with the Fender bass, you'll have to keep it as is or use the Vintage Noiseless to get rid of the hum. They do make hotter Noiseless pickups for Jazz, but those are exclusive to the particular models that they're used in, not for individual sale. Like, the hot ceramic Noiseless Jazz pickups on the Deluxe Jazz models. Duncan pickups and Fender pickups don't work properly together, unless you flip the magnets. But, I don't think you'd want to do that. Unless you're willing to flip one of the pickup's magnets, you'll have to use the same brand, either Fender or Duncan.

hehe sufferinrewind

i know where your point is , and i think the fender will stay like it is just because anyway she sound great with only the P-pickup

my concern now is my yamaha , i begin to be scared about the big job of cutting wood this bass will receive , and i surrelly not gonna give this job to mister anybody ,and a pro will cost a lot , lol maybe the same price as i pay for the bass lol

thanks

Re: bass jazz single coil question

oh well sorry sufferinrewind i know you said that earlier in this thread

but lewguitar said they only humcancelled when in series , not when alone

and my goal is to get em noiseless in every positon , so tell me they are noiseless if they run in position -bridge only/bridge-neck/neck only-
and tomorrow i go buying these pickup

so with these thank you for your help guys

He was talking about regular Jazz bass pickups. These are hum-canceling stack pickups, meaning they have two separate coils stacked on top of each other which cancel hum.
