Bass Pedals...

Re: Bass Pedals...

Most bass players I know will just have one simple pedal sitting around, which they barely use. I play my bass like a huge guitar, so I mix 'n' match guitar and bass gear. I like having a chain of stompboxes: distortion, flanger, delay - just like my guitar.

Re: Bass Pedals...

I still use the same MXR Dyna Comp compressor that I bought back in 1984!

The only other effects box I use with my bass is this thing:

Lots of tweakability and useable tones :)

Re: Bass Pedals...

my amp (svt5pro) has a gain channel, compression, and octave down. I find all those things can be useful. a good di is everything when you are playing live

Re: Bass Pedals...

I won a contest and got a 30hz and 60hz EQ booster from Mantic Conceptual. Putting it after an Epiphone EB3 with that huge neck pickup is a gut-shaker. I'd like a comp and a boost that will push my bass into that 70's speaker limit OD an I'd be good, I think.

Axe---cord---amp.
I like the sound of basses pretty clean.

This is me. My one simple pedal is a chorus pedal that I use sometimes on Pink Floyd's Have a Cigar, when I remember to bring it.

To a person of my age, the expression Bass Pedals equates to just one thing - the mighty Moog Taurus II.

This is me also.

Re: Bass Pedals...

I almost always use my Sansamp Bass Driver, set to a clean setting, just to change an OK bass tone to a "just like on a CD" bass tone.
I'll sometimes use my BBE Opto-Stomp compressor, for the same reason. You can't really tell it's doing anything, it just makes the bass sit right in the mix.
And also for the same reason, I'll use a little of the overdrive in the Waves CLA Bass plugin, set to growl, and on a low setting, on recorded bass tracks. I may not actually want to hear any breakup, but it brings the bass out in the mix without it stepping on something else.

Re: Bass Pedals...

I am a guitar player that loves pedals that just so happens to enjoy playing bass. As such, I am a bass player that loves pedals too. My bass pedal board is relatively simple and frankly seldom used but the pedals are there if I want them. Here is my little setup:

Sonic Research Turbo Tuner --> MXR Bass OD (swap out with a Fulltone Bass Drive Mosfet from time to time) --> MXR Chorus Deluxe --> Boss BF-2 Flanger (MIJ) --> MXR Bass Compressor

I would say at a minimum a bass pedal board should have a tuner, OD (or fuzz depending upon what you like), and a Compressor. If your amp already has a gain setting that give you OD you like and a compressor built in, a tuner will get it done. All the other stuff is just gravy.

I play it all through an Ampeg SVT-CL. The compressor is pretty much the only pedal that is on more often than not.

I occasionally "jam" with a few buddies. As the Ampeg is a beast to lug around, I use a SansAmp Bass Driver Programmable (just a three channel Bass Driver) direct to my buddy's small PA. This lets me emulate my SVT pretty darn well and save my back. I just add it to the end of the pedal board and call it a day. If you want to go direct and still have some level of control over your tone, than I would say that a Bass Driver is a must as well.

I've actually used my guitar pedal board for my bass before. A 535Q Wah, MXR Custom Badass Distortion (which I actually bought for the bass), an EH Small Clone chorus pedal, a MXR 10 Band EQ (which I also use for the bass with the exact same mid boost curve that I use for guitar), and an MXR Noise Gate.

Re-Post

For me it's extremely necessary to use a compressor and a good sounding preamp. If I don't have those 2 I feel uncomfortable playing.
What I use in my pedal rack is the EBS Multicomp and the BDDI, plus some other pedals.

Here is a picture of my setup when we recorded our EP (check out my signature if you want to listen it)

Re: Bass Pedals...

Ever try the BBE Sonic Maximizer pedal for bass? It can be a real problem solver when having to use a house rig or bad venue.

As a rule I don't use one but have tried it both in front of my amp and in the effects loop. I can pretty well dial in what I want with the amp eq but the Sonic Maximizer (Sonic Stomp in my case) can put the finishing touches on your tone shaping.

Re: Bass Pedals...

Besides a tuner, I think it depends on the genre. Funk, jazz, fusion etc, you want a compressor to tame that thumbstyle. Rock, you want a gain boost/OD pedal to add some hair to match your guitarist. Country, maybe a 'verb or chorus pedal to add a little room to your sound.
