Bass players/8x10

Is the Ampeg 8x10 still a relevant cab? I realize we still see a lot of them in use, but are new models still being sold in large numbers?
Thanks

Re: Bass players/8x10

Relevant? Yeah. It's the standard by which pretty much everything else is measured.

"Sounds as deep and punchy as an 8x10 SVT, but at half the size and weight"....that could be a quote from any of six or seven boo-teek cab makers I can think of.

I see plenty of recent ones on the used market here in LA. So somebody must be buying them new. Prolly them young whippersnappers into their heavy metal and punk rock stuff.....

Re: Bass players/8x10

The Ampeg 8x10 isthe standard, kind of like a Marshall 4x12.

Me, I preffer dual 4x10's. I get better dispersion on stage and they're easier to load and unload from my truck. :burnout:

I gotta think there's something to the notion of the cabinet in regards to size and projection.

4 x 10's are great cabs but even with two of them, I've never heard them boom like a single 8 x 10.

Re: Bass players/8x10

Very true, Skarey. I don't get the boom that a good 8x10 does straight from the cabs. I get it from a DI feed into the PA. The cabs are merely monitors.

You apparently have better sound guys (or play better rooms) than I'm used to....

All kidding aside, the right PA run correctly sounds amazing, but it's nice to hear and feel that shock wave behind you. I run a Schroeder 4x10 these days and it's as close to the SVT whomp as I can get and still lift it with relative ease.

Re: Bass players/8x10

Well, I'm our band's sound guy, so I can mix how I like. :)

As far as the PA, Yamaha's dual 18" boxes sound really nice. We run a pairof those for subs and they really kick.

Re: Bass players/8x10

yeah, I definitely want to get an ampeg 8x10 and an SVT of some sort. It's the standard for a reason ya know? I mean my peavey rig, while still a peavey, is a nice rig but I want that classic look and sound. I got the opportunity to play through an old school ampeg rig during one of our festival dates...man, what a monster. I loved that thing!

Re: Bass players/8x10

Few things sound as great as an Ampeg through an 8x10. Unfortunately few things weigh so much.
