Don't forget that with G&L, you can get the SB-2, which has P/J pickups, or the JB-2 with Jazz bass pickups. I agree that the soapbar pickups of the L15xx and L2xxx basses takes you slightly outside the Fender vibe, but these two basses leave you no excuses! My vote is for G&L, they're not just the new Fender, they're the old Fender too, all melted together.

No, I don't think there's really any manufacturer that can outdo a Fender for what they do. There are some amazing basses out there; I myself love Rickenbackers, but they're in a different category. Tobias made some awesome basses, so did Schechter and Spector, even Ibanez had some notable models, Ernie Ball, Musicman, and Gibson Thunderbirds are pretty cool, too, but I don't think that any bass can out-Fender Fender. Leo really had the formula down.
