Bass Solo's who are your favorites!

Re: Bass Solo's who are your favorites!

Mmm...a lot of tasty bass players out there. I love a great bass player. John Paul Jones never really had a bass solo, I don't think, but his basslines were just so...musical. Many more like that as well, but I mention JPJ because I'm a Zeppelin freak. I also love the the bass solos in YYZ by Rush from Geddy Lee and the ripping bass riff he does in the middle of La Villa Strangiato. Back around 1985 I saw Santana and the bass player did a fifteen or so minute solo that blew me away. He played Purple Haze among other things. I don't know his name. Funny thing was I saw The Firm (Jimmy Page,Paul Rodgers) a few months later, and Tony Franklin played Purple Haze during a solo as well...Hmmm.

Yeah he is so under rated ( John Paul Jones)ntruely a total musician and in my top 5 list of all time greats..... I looked for some solo stuff on him but didn't find anything out there that I liked enough, Geddy lee, and Chris Squire constantly rip it up regularly. thanks for your input....

I really like Billy Sheehan, not so much for what he can do solo, but who else can double Vai's leads and sound good doing it?

favorite bass solo? easily Geddy Lee on side 1 of Hemispheres. whenever i listen to that album, all i can focus on is his playing. that never happens on anything else i listen to.

Not sure if it really counts as a solo...but that bass riff in 'The Chain' springs to mind everytime the words bass solo are mentioned around me. It's classic. I've also always loved Andy Frasers playing, especially in Mr Big. Gives me chills everytime.

Personally I'm not a huge fan of 'solo spots' in live situations, those points in the show when there's only one person left on stage when they bore you to death for five minutes showing off their chops. That goes for bass, drums, guitar...
But back to the original question:
Some of the stuff Jaco does on Heavy weather blows me away to this day. Teen Town is just a great track combining intricate playing with a good groove and a sense of fun.

The first two Joe Jackson albums, Look Sharp and I'm The Man.

Graham Maby FTW.
