Bass with distortion?

Re: Bass with distortion?

I haven't so much wondered as I've heard. There's a long history of distorted bass, ranging from a little bit of grit to all out fuzzbass.

Re: Bass with distortion?

yeah. bass distortion is quite common.

imo, it sounds cool when used correctly and in the right place.

Re: Bass with distortion?

My bassist actually uses it alot (not in our songs, I think he uses it for a bass solo in one song though), as he's heavily influenced by solo bassist, and plays Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten, and Stu Hamm stuff like no tomorrow.

Cliff Burton made a damned good use of distortion and wah.

Re: Bass with distortion?

Hmm strange, I've never heard it before and never really knew it existed, but yeah I sorta pictured it to sound really fuzzy and blurry. I guess it's better off without it.

Re: Bass with distortion?

Actually ya know I think I have seen/heard a distorted bass before. A couple years ago at a friend's school they had a Battle of the Bands competition and one of the guys in it did a bass solo and I remember it sounding really distorted, but really good! He was awesome!

But can you buy bass amps with distortion or do you just hook in a distortion pedal into a normal bass amp or something?

Re: Bass with distortion?

Not a bit. It's grand. A little bit of drive can give a bass tone some great energy without really sounding distorted. Beyond that, I think it's clearly in the realm of "special effect' but I've still found uses for it. Getting tired of hearing mondodistorto guitar and clean bass? Swith'em eup. Combine a jangly guitar with a fat distorted bass. The effect is quite different, but can add some variety in a series of otherwise same-y songs.

Re: Bass with distortion?

im sure there is an amp with distortion, i just havent heard of .it....

Re: Bass with distortion?

There are one or two SWR heads that I can think of that have distortion built in. Having trouble recalling the model names righ this second...

Re: Bass with distortion?

Bass Distortion. No sir, I don't like it.

My bassist used to use it too much in the wrong songs, all the sudden there'd be this HUGE increase in volume and feedback coming from him that sounded like ass. Ruined some good songs, but what the hell, not like we're famous.

However, I do like a little grind to bass occasionally. My favorite is in "Big Machine" by Velvet Revolver. However when you're bassist is using a Double Muff, DS-1, Guv'Nor, and 2 different multi-fx pedals (Zoom and a BP-200 or 100 or whatever), and has 4 times the amount of distortion pedals than both me and my rythm guitarist combined, something wrong.

Tube Bass amps will distort when you crank them, the same way guitar amps will. I cant think offhand of a bass amp with distortion built in. If I find it im gunna break it before my bassist gets a hold of it.

I take that back. From what I remember at the Battle of the Bands competition that bass did sound sweet with distortion. I had just pictured a complete mess of noise coming out of it at first. :)

But then again it does depend on who's playing the bass. :burnout:

Re: Bass with distortion?

Pick up the King Crimson albums Starless and Bible Black, Larks Tongues in Aspic, and Red to hear distorted bass by an awesome player (John Wetton) in complex rock songs.

Will do

Re: Bass with distortion?

I've heard that bass with distortion just completely craps over all the other frequencies so you can't hear anything else, lol.

Re: Bass with distortion?

I had a problem with my sound a while back, so I decided to pickup my bass and play the part and use distortion ... I was heartily impressed with the sound. Very much a Rock Crusher type of sound to my ears

yeah dont forget, if you are doing like a jazz gig you most likely arent bringing a distortion unit for a bass....for rock though, it can sound very killer or very crappy

Re: Bass with distortion?

John Wetton used Hiwatt guitar amps. Chris Squire uses Marshall guitar stacks for the high frequencies of his bass. Just the top end is distorted.
