I've heard that bass with distortion just completely craps over all the other frequencies so you can't hear anything else, lol.
Bee, I've experienced it first hand.

Of all the millions of times bassist has clicked on distortion, it's sounded good ONCE.

Re: Bass with distortion?

I think that pickups have a lot more influence on the sound of the bass than with guitars. Also technique comes into play, fingers, thumb and slap are out of the question, I have to use a pick for this stuff

Distortion on Basses with Precision and EB-1 style pickups tends to be really "mushy" and loose.

On actives and J-style's I've found I get a very managable distortion

Re: Bass with distortion?

There are amps with a distortion channel. I believe Mesa's new Big Block 750 has one, as does the SVT5 that jeremy mentioned. Any bass amp with a tube pre (like my Mesa Walkabout) can be dialed into the gritty range.

Bass distortion has its place. Only a very few have made it work effectively - Cliff Burton being #1, IMO.

Another place you can hear distorted bass that I think sounds pretty good is in Ben Folds Five's "One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces"

That has to be the coolest bass with wah and distortion song ever. They were one of the best non guitar bands IMO.

BTW I really like a bass through a Big Muff.
