my friend wants to buy a bass and im helping him. he found these basses at music 123 called asc i think and they are really cheap. like 100 bucks and they look good. but ive never hear of them. wondering if anyone knows about them. also, he is looking at the squier affinity basses. but one other question i had is, what is the tonal difference between the precision bass and the jazz bass?

yeah and also we're looking at like rogue, washburn, ibanez, etc.

Rogue = worst anything ever.

A P-bass will sound thick, thumpy, bassy. A jazz will be smoother, but with less bass.

For less than 200 dollars, no matter what you buy, it'll blow chunkaroos. Now, if you buy a 150 dollar squier and invest about... 150-200 dollars worth of parts, you'd have a pretty decent bass (rewiring, fret-job, new tuners, new bridge) He'd be better off saving up a bit and just buying a nice bass.

I would suggest to see what you can get for the same money in a used piece.

+1 sometimes you can find sweet deals on ebay. I almost always buy used gear over new gear.

You get what you pay for. A hundred dollar instrument is going to sound just like that....cheap. A jazz bass will give you a bit more tonal variation due to the multiple pickups. A precision bass is still the industry standard. Lots of thump, a little more rude sounding perhaps than a jazz.

if he wanted to, could my friend buy a jazz bass, take out the pickguard with the front pickup, and put in a p bass pickup into that position with the jazz pickup still at the bass? would this sound good?

i got the lefty SX jazz bass copy in the 30 inch short scale version 3 weeks ago. Great deal for the $, plays great compared to a lefty mim jazz bass i played, i love it, but for recording, a p bass will sometimes be better due to the hum cancelling of its pickup. I recommend the SX strats and basses 100%, even gig worthy i would imagine.
