Bassman Questions

Re: Bassman Questions

Everyone should own a Twin for awhile just to know what they sound like and to put more clients into Chiropractic offices.

I get the Jones for one every once in awhile...but all it takes is trying to heft one and thinking what it'll be like moving it from the ground to the back of a truck or SUV at 1:30 in the morning after a gig.....and suddenly that Jones just fades away!

Fender should offer those lifts for elevating wheelchair uses into their vehicle for lifting twins.

Re: Bassman Questions

i think the vibroking is only like 75 pounds

A buddy of mine picked up his Vibro King by the handle and the top of the amp tore right off! The cab was not fingerjoined in the corners like vintage Fenders.

Fender gave him a whole new cabinet...but the new one was built the same cheapski way.

I had a Vibro King for a while. When you plug into the front of one, it's like plugging into a stand alone Fender Reverb unit. If you go around the back of the amp and plug in there you can bypass the reverb and, IMO, get a better tone with more gain.

Mine was one of he first Vibro Kings and they've changed a few things in the design. Mine used an EL84 tube to drive the reverb for example and I think now Fender uses a 6V6. And they've beefed up the reverb transformer too, from what I understand.

But I've played a few of the newer ones and they don't sound much differant from the original run.

I loved my Vibro King when I played it in the store and thought it was the best amp I'd ever played. The reviews often say something similar.

But I got tired of the tone pretty quickly. A little to grainy for my tastes.

I felt the same way about my Matchless SC-30. Loved it at first...but eventually got tired of it: a little to rough and grainy on the top.

I keep returning to the classic tone of my modded Deluxe Reverbs...I never get tired of them.

Re: Bassman Questions

I have tried VK's since they came out and I haven't heard one that I like yet---no NFB, too grainy/gainy, midrangey, no clarity. I have never understood what all the fuss was about. Ditto for Matchless.
Give me a '68 SF Twin anyday...
