assuming correct size and impedence, can i use a fender bassman speaker in my classic 20, or will that suck? :eek13:

Re: bassman speaker

well we'll see -- i just bought it on ebay for $20. -- figured i could risk it :laugh2: -- i guess there's not much demand for 16 ohm, 10" speakers...

Re: bassman speaker

Ahh...that speaker came out of a Bassman 10. The Bassman 10 was a short lived mid 70's Fender Bassamp that was originally aimed at guitar players or studio bass players...the amp was a little more proof of CBS Fender really missing the point. They heard that guitar players liked the "4x10" Bassman...referring to the 50's Tweed amp so they made a new 4x10 Bassman that was "more guitar friendly" due to the Master volume...BTW, the master volume sucks!

Anyway...as for the speaker it's a 20 watt (give or take) CTS 10 with a ceramic magnet BUT...check it before you put it in anything. Some of the Bassman 10 amps had 4, 32 ohm 10's wired in parallel for a total of 8 ohms while the others had 4, 8 ohm speakers wired in series/parallel for 8 ohms...the point is that I am pretty sure that speaker is not 16 ohms...

Re: bassman speaker

how do i tell what ohm-age it is?

When you get it there might be a sticker with the wattage, impedence and model number on it but don't hold your breath...if there is not read it with a volt meter...it won't give you the number you'll be expecting (it won't say 4, 8, 16 or 32 ohms) but you'll be able to tell.

well i got it in -- the seller assures me it's 16 ohms, but no sticker or other info that i can see -- anyway, it's in and the amp hasn't blown up -- so how does it sound? freakin' beautiful man!!! it was a big pain in the butt to get in because one of the screws holding the old speaker in was frozen and i ended up taking the whole cabinet apart, but all's well that ends well and it is really a fantastic improvement -- for $20 plus shipping!

Re: bassman speaker

and i've got jj tubes on the way, so i'm hopeful this is gonna be a very fine little amp
