Re: Basswood Vs. Mahogany
All I know is that the basswood 89 rg750 i have, when it was still playable (before the broken neck) sounded great.
My next guitar will be a warmoth soloist with basswood and maple top, but mahogony neck. Imo the neck wood plays just as much a role (some say more) than the body wood. The mapple top will be more for top strength than anything else cause I'm just getting the 1/8 veneer.
By many believed rules, my parker nitefly with relatively low wood volume swamp ash body should be bright as hell, but it isn't. It's got a low mid growl and is fairly warm for swamp ash....because it has a mahogony neck.
When I started pup modding a year ago, my reference was the parker brightness stigma, but that was based on my faulty assumption of using standard parkers, which have even less wood, as my basis. So early I kept going for darker, thick pups to compensate, when I really didn't need to. Is it as warm as an all mahogony LP? No, but it's wamer than the alder strat deluxe I had.
And many argue that the quality of the basswood makes a difference. If it's a good quality, then it just fits in the tonal spectrum between mahogony and alder, ash, etc, big deal. Balance it out with a mahogony neck if you wnat to stay on the warmer side, go maple neck if you want brighter, etc.
I don't like heavy guitars (my back, oye), so basswood is a plus for me. And I've never dinged a guitar, because I'm careful, so I don't care if it's soft.
