Battery powered amps

I've got two portable, battery powered amps at the moment, a Roland Cube Street and an older Crate Taxi TX30-B. Found both in pawn shops. I wasn't looking for a battery powered amp(s), but they were so cheap, I couldn't pass them up.

The Roland sounds amazing for it's size and the amp models are fairly realistic. I generally keep it on the blackface setting and use a pedal for dirt. The Crate has no amp models or effects. but has far superior volume than the Roland. I actually played a gig with the just the crate and it was OK. I had an older Digitech RP unit and programmed 5-6 blackface tones with various degrees of dirt and I was surprised at how good it sounded.

I picked up an older Digitech Expression pedal in trade a while back. I use the direct out to the crate and the amp out to the Roland. Set to the Univibe or Leslie setting, with the pedal in up position provides a huge tone with a bit of verb/delay ambiance and a lush little warble. Setting the amps 10-15 feet apart is an aural delight! With a MHP 72 Degrees overdrive in front, the variety of sweet, organic tones is addicting. My new little Tone City Bad Horsie pedal also works well as does my lovely old Marshall Blues Breaker.

A new pawn shop opened in town and upon my first visit, I spotted a brand new Crate Limo Taxi TX50D. They have it marked at $199.00. I've done a bit of checking and they are now discontinued and commanding higher prices. I've seen several in fairly decent condition in the $400 and up range.

My only gripe about my current Taxi is the lack of reverb. Also, an XLR input would be nice. Well, the Limo addresses those with a nice selection of DSP effects and it does have the XLR input.

So, I'm thinking I'll sell the Roland and buy the Limo. I imagine running both Taxi's in stereo would be pretty cool! Especially in the middle of nowhere.
I paid $25 for the TX30 and $9 for the battery. I got the Roland for $125, so hoping for a similar deal on the Limo. Since the store is new, they are willing to deal.

Anyone else dig these cool amps you can take anywhere?

Re: Battery powered amps

Love my Yamaha THR's for going mobile and for when the power is out from one storm or another.

Re: Battery powered amps

Blackstar fly3 . Has a 3 inch speaker unbelievable sound and volume for such a little thing its impressive to say the least. Also the Vox Rhythm 5 another battery operated or power amp very good and diversified sounds.

Re: Battery powered amps

I have a Limo, but mine has reverb. Great, loud little amp. I've used it for solo acoustic gigs for 15 years, and only replaced the battery once. I've done weddings on the beach with mine. It is amazing what you can think to book if you don't need an outlet. I'd recommend a Limo to anyone.

Re: Battery powered amps

I got a Roland Micro Cube about ten tears ago, when I was travelling a lot. It is very handy and has seen a lot use, much more use than I thought it would get when I bought it. It sounds good for what it is and what it is for.

My little work horse :

Bluetooth controllable or stereo aux in - X2 XLR/TRS and full FX
engine for three individual channels
Mackie FreePlay.jpgMackie-Freeplay-2.jpg
P.A. / acoustic or electric guitar amp with my T.C.Helicon Voice Live 3X
, it's got really great stereo imagery too . 150 watts RMS .

I've the tilt stand , gig bag , pole mount & rechargeable lithium
ion battery . Besides my electric and acoustic I plug in my Roland
GR33 guitar synth module and loop stereo synth FX going along
side of the guitar(s) and vocal(s) , works as a personal stage monitor
with aux outs to the front end of a P.A. system .

Other stuff I play through it are :
Electrified Harps w/a Shure 520D Green Bullet mic
Trumpet , harps , Ukulele , 000 resonator mic'd w/phantom off my T.C.Helicon
Acoustic electric nylon 000 & dread steel guitars .
I am most happy and satisfied with this system . Maybe if I were to add battery
powered sub woofer it would be the ultimate portable set up , but as it is it sounds killer.

Re: Battery powered amps

Parts for Crates are no longer available if it needs service.
Any Roland service techs should be able to repair them should the need arise (Roland stuff is really good).

Re: Battery powered amps

That little Mackie amp is wonderful. I played with it at NAMM and thought it was a great idea. If I needed another battery powered amp, that would be the one.

Re: Battery powered amps

You can read about the Limo here. It isn't made anymore, but it is one amazing little amp.

Re: Battery powered amps

Roland Microcube. The first amp that I bought when I got back into playing. Played my 7 string through it on Pacific Beach in San Diego CA. Held some Japanese tourists in rapt attention for about 10mins.
Great tone for it's size. Headphone/direct out that could go into a P.A.
6 AA batteries will last a night of playing no problem. Maybe a week of nights. I never ran mine to failure.

Vox Rhythm 5. They claim about 17 hrs and its close. The small Blackstar 3 Fly doesn't tell you, But I have been using it 5 weeks before replacing the batteries, Playing time 14 hrs a week its impressive.
