Let's say you were getting a 2x12, moving down from a 4x12.

Of the three choices in the poll above, which would you choose and why? For consistency's sake, I'm going to load said cab with V30s (my favorites), the Carvin already comes with them.

Re: Battle of the 2x12's!!

I don't see a poll but I'd go for an open back cab with either two Celestion G12H30 speakers or one G12H30 and one Vintage 30. Closed back would be fine too, but I like open back.

I like the open-back dispersion but I like the closed-back sound better. I'm such a picky mofo.

I also thought about mixing a V30 and a G12T75 too, but I'll experiment with that later.

Re: Battle of the 2x12's!!

^^^ hey, that's all well and good that you're chiming in with what YOU'd like, but I'm asking you to at least pick one out of the three listed. Pretend you don't have another choice. ;)

Re: Battle of the 2x12's!!

I haven't heard the Carvin or the Avatar, but if you're going for a Marshall 1936 look for one of the old plywood ones - the recent production has been MDF. They do sound different! I have a JCM800 1936 and it sounds great (even with G12-75Ts).

Re: Battle of the 2x12's!!

IMO those 3 cabs are pretty similar and that being the case I'd opt for the Avatar just to save cash, plus you can order it with V30's as well. Of the 3 cabs you mentioned the Avatar is the winner...

Now, that said id I were gonna buy a closed back 2x12 I'd opt for a 60's Bassman 2x12 or a Dr. Z "Z Best"...the Z Best really packs punch for a 2x12 but the Bassman is just a classic cab for me.

Re: Battle of the 2x12's!!

No love for the Earcandy Buzz Bomb?

Edit: Since you insist, I voted for the Marshall, since I owned and played one for many years. These days. I'd probably buy the Avatar based on its bang/buck ratio. Dave is good people.

I really dig the Mesa vertical 2x12's - those are definitely my favorite, tonewise.

Avatar's Bogner sized one would be way cool, as well.

I would agree with Lew, but using the G12H30 and Vintage 30.

I like tone machines!

Thanks! I have a Matchless two x 12 open back cab the size of a two x 12 Chieftan. It has the G12H30 and Vintage 30 combo and it's the best sounding two x 12 I've ever owned. I had a pair of Celestion alnico blue 12's in it for a while so I could connect my Matchless SC-30 to it and get more of the tone of a Vox AC-30 but when I sold the SC-30 I went with the G12H30 and Vintage 30 combo again. Can't be beat, IMO. Lew

Re: Battle of the 2x12's!!

I say get the avatar loaded with whatever you prefer, v30s or as Lew suggested the v30 g12h30 combo

Re: Battle of the 2x12's!!

Avatar...G12H30+V30..........or Hellatones (same thing, already broken in!)

Re: Battle of the 2x12's!!

I have the Marshall, which came with reissue greenbacks. They have way too much base for me, and the sound isn't "tight". I've really been using a 4X10 more, but after reloading, will take the 2X12 over a half stack any day.

Re: Battle of the 2x12's!!

I actually have a Marshall 1966a on the way. It looks like a smaller angled 4x12" but it's a 2x12" with the speakers placed diagonally. Closed back of course in true Marshall fashion. I like angled cabs because I want the speakers, at least some of them, pointing right at my ears.

I'll tell you guys how it sounds.

Edit: I hope I didn't make a mistake, I bought it with the idea that I would be getting a JTM 45 clone..

Avatar with V30's or Hellatones for sure

On a side note Randall has a 2x12 cab with V30's and a removable back panel to switch from closed to open.

Interesting. The G12M greenbacks strike me as having less bass than other Celestions. One reason I don't care for them in an open back cabinet. They're cool speakers with a nice crunchy breakup but they seem to lack deep bass unless in a big sealed cab like a 4 x 12 Marshall bottom. Lew
