Battle of the really, really cheap guitars

Do y'all think that this guitar is worth twice as much as this one? Both are brands that get some notice around here, when the discussion turns to bargains. The more expensive one is obviously a bit more true to the shape of the instrument that both are ripping off, and includes better tuners and a maple top (the pickup differences don't matter, since they'll be tossed anyway) but the cheaper one...is cheaper.

i think there both same about but i would just go with a cheaper like name brand guitar.:headbang:

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "cheaper like name brand guitar." Are you perhaps reccomending one of the budget offerings from Epiphone?

If that's the case, my reply would be thus: Nah.

Epi's are nice enough, but they offer nothing in this price range that brings either these features or the level of word-of-mouth praise of the Agiles or (to a lesser extent) the SXs.

I just can't stand the body shape of the cheaper one..... it's a massacre of the original shape.

So that, plus the better features, would make me pick the more expensive one. Plus it's still cheap compared to other guitars. ;)

Re: Battle of the really, really cheap guitars

As one who owns a bevy of cheap guitars . . . :laugh2: If you're going to go cheap, then go cheap. Get the $130 one. You do it, to save money.

Once you start to get up into the $250 - $300 range, there starts to be some pretty interesting pawn shop/eBay finds. ;)

Re: Battle of the really, really cheap guitars

Wow the first one has some pretty nice features for hardly no money at all if you think about it. I would diffently get the first one, it has really nice features, it has pretty cool looking finish, and the shape is closer to a LP then the other.

Re: Battle of the really, really cheap guitars

I would go with the Agile. They are great guitars!

Re: Battle of the really, really cheap guitars

I'd go with a J. Reynolds, cheaper than the nicer one, and nicer than that. And the pickups dont sound half bad (not close to Duncans, but they can last a few days if needed)

Re: Battle of the really, really cheap guitars

Agile it is, then.

Anyone else notice that they've just added a cool looking silverburst version of the 2500? Maybe they've had it before, but it hasn't been there during the past week.

It's as expensive as the 2800, but without that models better nut, frets and pickups.

It reminds me of this game at amusement parks. You play, and each time you win you can upgrade your prize. Basically, the basic prize is this teddy bear, only the mouth is all wrong and ugly. So if you pay more, you can upgrade to one without the ugly mouth.

Re: Battle of the really, really cheap guitars

I hate to say it, but that Agile is 10 times better than what you'll get from an epiphone if the stats on it are true. Epiphones use a compresses alder/mahogany type plywood for their backs and their maple tops are usually 2 pieces with a thin maple veneer glued on top to make them look like it's a solid piece of maple on top. I'd buy that Agile in a hearbeat. If it truly is solid mahogany in the back and solid maple on top. Also, the Agile comes with a bone nut and grover tuners! This is almost a too good to be true deal. Epiphones have crappy plastic nuts and their tuners are crap.

As a matter of fact, the Agile 3000 model even has a 1 piece solid maple neck!!!! It's still nearly half the cost of a epiphone which have 2 - 3 piece necks!

These Agiles are the best kept secrets for LP clones.

Analogy of the year.

Um, a couple things. The older epiphone les pauls had the pancake bodies, but things have been different for a while. I still don't know if a particular guitar is mahogany or alder and where, and I'm not convinced that maple is standard for the caps instead of alder. But all the Agiles have maple necks and mahogany bodies with flame or quilt veneers. Mahogany necks are present on some of the more expensive models. Maple caps instead of mahogany caps are present on some of the more expensive models, while the higher models with solid finishes have mahogany caps.

Re: Battle of the really, really cheap guitars

Hey, no need to tell me.

I wouldn't be too harsh to metallicajs, though. When I was 14, I cared about the name on the headstock too. I really believed that it was the first, last and only mark of true quality. Now, after 13 years of playing experience (still a tiny number compared to many here, I know) and one -- miserable -- year spent in MI sales...not so much.

The Epi LP 100 is exactly the same price as the Agile 2800. A coparison of specs is revealing, even before you take into account the positive reviews of Agiles by people on this and other forums.
