Battle of the Solid States

Okay, I know a lot of people are tube snobs and say ew to solid states but I actually prefer solid states. Don't hate. I'm actually at a dilemma though. Peavey bandit or orange crush pro? given mind that I play mostly pop punk, punk rock, and heavy metal.

I really like both. I like how the orange is basically a solid state rockerverb and is really rich and creamy and I like the bandit because it's a timeless punk rock classic.

Also given mind of which would go better with my current rig; two strats (one SSS and one HSS) with a zakk wylde overdrive

Re: Battle of the Solid States

That new orange SS line looks sick, I want to try one pretty badly

Re: Battle of the Solid States

I really do not know too much about SS Amps.....but I have always thought the Tech 21 were a pretty good sounding product.
good luck

Re: Battle of the Solid States

I am a good TONE snob. If you don't think crappy sounding tube amps exist - you are an idiot. Tell your tube tone friends I said that.

I'll take a bandit all day every day, and twice nightly gigs on tour!

But I'm an old man, and have never been a fan of Orange. Bandits have rocked more of the world in reality than MArshall and Fender put together.

Tracii Guns said he record with bandits and they were commonly used behind empty marshall cabs.

Re: Battle of the Solid States

I would go with the Bandit. Certainly not a fan of Orange's SS stuff...the bandit however is a surprisingly versatile, good sounding amp.

Re: Battle of the Solid States

In my experience, the bandit also takes at least some dirt pedals well, which you can't say about all solid state amps.

I recently got rid of a really nice Bandit simply because it was too damn heavy for me to lug everywhere. Mine weighted 45lbs...about the same as a couple tube combo amps I've owned.

Re: Battle of the Solid States

I'll second the Tech21 comment - you should at least try out a TradeMark 60... verrry flexible, though a touch unconventional.

That being said, Peavey's reputation for bulletproof shows on the Bandit. I've seen those with the tolex absolutely worn through from being thrown around, and still rockin'.

Re: Battle of the Solid States

Silverstripe Transtube Bandit with Sheffield Speaker. If you want a head, the Transtube Supreme XL is the same thing.

Or, if you want more sounds, the Peavey XXL is based on the Transtube Bandit with more channels/options.

The Peavey amps will be cheaper (especially used) and will be more versatile. The Orange will sound like an Orange, which isn't for everyone.

Re: Battle of the Solid States

The new SS Orange amps are really great sounding amps. You do have to like the Orange sound though as they are fairly dark with a ton of low mids and low end.

Re: Battle of the Solid States

Gonna suggest a mustang 3. If you want "cred" ss amps get Randall, Roland, Kustom, Musicman and Marshall valvestate. Bandits are going for similar prices as cheaper tube amps...even Peavey amps that are recognized as decent.

Re: Battle of the Solid States

I used to use a few different Marshall 2nd-gen Valvestate amps as my main rigs. I had a VS100R head and a VS265R combo at one point. They can be made to sound pretty decent if you dial them in carefully.

Re: Battle of the Solid States

I like the bandit
My buddy has one and prefers it to his Twin
Mostly because the Twin is do heavy

I have several solid state amps
The Roland Cube sounds nice
My Laney GC80A has a nice thick British tone

Haven't tried the Orange but
If it's between an Orange and a Bandit

Bandit

Re: Battle of the Solid States

Ampeg VH140C will make both the bandit and orange cry.

Yeah but they're getting harder to find at a cheap price. You can still get good deals on the Crate GX-130C which is the same thing. (I got a GX-130C 2x12 Combo for $70.)

Re: Battle of the Solid States

I swear by my Marshall Valvestate AVT150 combo. Replaced the tube almost a year ago as the original ECC83 burned out, can't stop playing it. It always has sounded so good, to me anyways.

Re: Battle of the Solid States

I've been practicing and gigging with a Micro Terror into an Emperor 2x12. Sounds massive for a tiny little head with only one tube in it.
