I am one of those xxx owners that you speak of (the amp and the reading material) and I used to have a BBE sonic stomp. I think the issue with this pedal, and many others, is that in most cases it presents you a solution to a problem that you didn't know you had. When I first got my xxx (first tube amp) I went on a pedal hunting spree to try and make it sound like the extreme compressed digital distortion that I grew up with. MXR 6-band eq, various od pedals, bbe sonic stomp to name a few. It all ended up being overkill. Sure, there is some extra clarity with the bbe, but my best tone to date is just guitar + amp.

Here is and old clip where I turn on all of the pedals. The BBE sounds pretty good here, but I preferred to just sell it and keep my rig simple.

I'm now at the point where I just use guitar and amp for rhythm, od for leads, and the 6-band eq is on every now and then if I want to add some extra clarity to the mid range live, but I don't use it for recording anymore. Bottom line, no one should rush out and get a BBE sonic just for the hell of it, you can probably get the tone you want without it. Leave it for the audiophiles who actually understand what it does.

Now, where my Sonic Maximizer (actually, it is a sonic stomp ) really shines is when I put it into the loop of my PA system. Some people will claim that the BBE is a simple EQ box, but I sure as hell have NEVER heard an EQ box adjust sound so that it changes the perception of speaker placement!

Bottom line: The BBE Sonic Maximizer is a cool tool and it will work, if you use it with some common sense.

I used a sonic maximizer for a while with my PA setup, but I (personally) did not like what it did to distorted guitar. For a while I inserted it on a group with the drums, where it did seem to enhance the lows and highs (especially the symbols), but kept it off the guitars. In the end, I stopped using it...as my PA got better, I did not feel the need for it.

i agree, those amps have loads of gain, if you want to reduce some of the fizzy sound try a lower gain pre-amp tube in V2...

i havnt noticed any thing fizzy.......i really like the triple x head.....when i dont use both cabs in a full stack,i break it down and run 2 half stacks..the other half being powered by a peavey rock master head....talk about a spread and a full ,thick sound.

i havnt noticed any thing fizzy.......i really like the triple x head.....when i dont use both cabs in a full stack,i break it down and run 2 half stacks..the other half being powered by a peavey rock master head....talk about a spread and a full ,thick sound.

i didn't think my tone was fizzy until i started listening tony iommi, his "Fused" cd has some killer tones on there...
