Beefed Up PAF Recs

Looking for the famous hot PAF sound but would like beefed up low end, lots of mids, and a bit rolled off high end. Custom 5 was decent, but not enough mids and too much highs. This is going in a Gibson Explorer, what would you all recommend?

Custom Custom might be next in line. I have one in my Jackson right now and it's like the OP description.

However, Explorer is mahogany, might be a bit darker. A straight Custom might be fine there.

In between PAF and Custom would be a Brobucker for me.

brobucker! its got the muscle that some think a paf lacks. good bottom, firm mids, clear top that isnt overly bright.

The 59/Custom Hybrid is also a great choice. You can't go wrong with any of the suggestions here.

How much beef are we talking here?

Like a 1/4 lb burger up to a 1/3 lb Burger?

Or like a Wendy's single up to a Triple w/ Cheese?

+1 on UA5 in the Cutom5. But you really can't beat a Brobucker in the muscular PAF category.
It has rich body and warm, open highs: very well-defined, neither harsh nor muffled.
Along with great touch response & cleanup.

How about RCUOA5 in either a 59b or the 59/Custom hybrid?

Does the Whole Lotta Humbucker have a place in this conversation? I haven't played one, but on paper, it seems like it might fit the bill.

I mentioned that one up a few posts and would consider it a "hot vintage" output. (i.e. not quite moderate.) Don't know if it has quite enough "beef" for the op, but it sure sounds nice in the bridge position of my Les Paul! :fing2:

Would would be a less compressed custom?
This is turning into a moving target.

The 59/Custom might do it for you but I find it as scooped as the C5.

A bit of a curve ball but the Saturday Night Special has a flatter EQ with less output than the Custom series.

Lowering the pickup and raising pole pieces might get you less compression, too.

Does anyone know how much these for for at the Custom Shop? I know shop floor customs are (or recently we're) generally $160 but have no idea how they price existing custom winds like this or the special PG wind everyone loves.
