BEFORE YOU BUY A NEW PICKUP CONSIDER THIS " Things Are Seldom What They Seem ! "

If your the type of player that changes strings as often as you change your socks then there's a good chance that the new Seymour Duncan or Death Matrix Mark 4 pup that you just demoed on a Fendson Super Pro in the Guitar shop or at your friends place will be just what your looking for.
However if your like a lot of guitarists and only change your strings when one brakes every three months or so then consider this:
The tone or sound of a pup with fresh strings maybe terrific but after a couple of weeks when the strings are no longer so fresh and the sound becomes a bit muffled and seems to lack that smooth gentle top end then you may question your decision in buying this particularly pup.
You are now forced into changing your strings on a fortnightly basis or you risk the dreaded "maybe I should have bought the Death Metal Thrash MK6 after all " syndrome.
On the other hand if you were to have bought the brighter of the two pups you were considering say the Atomic Explosion Crunch Serie 3 knowing that after a couple of weeks when the strings had aged / mellowed that it would sound just right, then you would have made an astute purchase.
Motto of the story :
If you prefer palying with "Vintage strings " ( Dead strings ) then be careful when selecting a vintage style pup or a "smooth " style pup on a guitar equipped with strings that are changed on a daily basis. ( Antiquity and Seth Lover potential purchasers beware. )
Take note also of the gauge strings on the demo/friends guitar. If your friend uses Rocky Masher 13's and you prefer Tinker Bell 9's then you may be fairly dissapointed unless you have the ability to musically/mentally compensate for such a massive variation in tone.
Things are seldom what they seem ! ( Gilbert and Sullivan - An old songwriting team from the Sid Vicious era. ! )
What do you mean who was Sid Vicious ?

When I swap pickups, I usually use the same strings that were on it before. That is on most guitars though. If the guitar allows me to swap the pickup when the strings are slacked, I will re-use them.

I think folks who've been playing more than 3 years are aware of how bright and brassy new strings are for the first 2-3 days. I hate that sound myself, can't wait til it goes away when I put a new set on.

I know that string gauge has a drastic effect on tone, but I'll stop there

Dunno, usually as the strings get "mellower" I just add some more treble from the amp (and I seriously decrease it when I put new ones :9:)

But yeah, usually I prefer testing pickups with the old strings if/when possible :)

So where did Walters Junior go?

So, what you are saying is: It's not worth $3.00 or so for a new set of strings once a month to keep your tone? So buy a bright pickup so you can use dead strings? Hmm, never thought of it that way. I guess I'm just extravagant, I change my strings at least once a month, twice if we are playing gigs every weekend.
Like my wife says: " a pair of pantyhose doesn't last forever"
Sorry to say, neither do guitar strings.
