how many mistakes do i want to make let me retype that

if ur friend saves up the money he should go for something like a fender pro jnr or blues jnr, a laney lc15 or maybe a peavey classic but if i were him i would go for an all tube combo and not for moddeling equipment (unless he needs 100000 different sounds in one) but with a few effects an all tube combo should be versatile enough

Are you sure about that because I have heard a few bands out there have used those directly into their PAs for concerts. ex. Weezer has used podxts directly to the PAs for touring.

Get a little Laney 15 W class A. Change the Tubes in them if u dont like the one's in there ( all class A baby)

The POD is great, and IT IS better direct to PA.

If he gets an amp later, he should look into a keyboard or bass combo, something with a "transparent" sounding speaker (like a PA). It's even more money, but the POD xt Live is the same unit in a pedalboard...one unit for setup...just plug and play

well i suppose it comes down to taste but if it were me i would go for tube amps because it is more likely u would like them then not.
POD's have become very popular both because they are pretty realistic and the are so versatile.

well i suppose it comes down to taste but if it were me i would go for tube amps because it is more likely u would like them then not.
POD's have become very popular both because they are pretty realistic and the are so versatile. But I have found Line 6 amps expensive especially the duoverb and flexitone

I'm not the one buying it, I guess my friends budget would be probably around $200 at the max.

Forget tubes, he can barely afford strings :laugh2:

Seriously, in the 200$ range a good SS combo is the best he can do if he doesn´t trip over a dirt cheap tube amp at a yardsale or pawnshop

Weezer and Linkin Park are the first that come to mind... I can´t say I found either particularly good live (tonally)

But for his uses (Beginner, probably with no real idea yet of what tone he wants) a POD -> PC is a great idea

If I remember correctly, you can get the Carvin Vintage 16 (all tube) for $300

I think the POD > PC is the best idea for a beginnner though, because it gives you such a wide range of sounds, and can help you make your mind up about what you want to get when you do get an expensive amp.

That set up gets me by at the moment

If you've got about $6-700 the Traynor blue is the best amp I've heard for the money. I just bought one and it's very nice vintage, yet a bit more treble than the Marshall AVT-50w. I also compared other smaller amps with it and settled on the Crate RFX-15w SS. This amp sounds very tube-like and vintage. It's great using the Seth Lover or similar pup, and for only $150 it blows the competion away IMO. Crate also has the 30w RFX for about $250. I'd look at the crate SSs before the blues Jr. for price and clearity of tone. After searching and evaluating different amps for the past 8 months (including owning a Marshall AVT 150w and Fender frontman) I'm overly pleased with my selection of both the Traynor blue 50w tube and the Crate RFX15 SS.
