I got my 130wtt Fender M-80 1/2 stack at a pawn shop for $ 380.00, out the door. Its in darn near perfect shape, and yes its solid state and stupid loud.

GREAT advice all around!!!

I'm not too familiar with the Marshall MG30 that you have.....is there something you just truly dislike about it or is it that you think the 30watts won't keep up? Before making a bigger amp investment, I would maybe run that amp thru the wringer with the drummer beating the he!! out of the skins & see how it does. If you still don't care for it, try to pick up a 2-channel modelling amp...MY personal fav being the TECH21NYC Trademark 60... www.tech21nyc.com That's 2 footswitchable channels to give you clean tones on 1 & dirty tones on the other. Once you get better & you have an idea what tone you're looking for, move on to a nice tube amp.

ALSO....tube amp watts are approx double solid state (ie. a 30w tube amp is approx equal to a 60w SS amp....very loud!)...don't think a 30w tube amp can't keep up because your 30watter can't/couldn't!

SO.....I would upgrade the pick-ups AND the electronics in the guitar you have first. You'll be amazed at how different it can sound.

If you MUST HAVE a humbucker guitar, check out the MANY Les Paul clones. They are very easy to modify electronically & the pick-ups. My personal experience with the Ibanez (I-BEEN-HAD!) was not a good one: poor pick-ups & disastrous pain in the butt results with changing the string gauges (mainly due to my ignorance with trems!)...A LOT of people love them; I just warn if it has a trem, have the salesperson show you what needs to be done when changing strings!

ANYWAY.....good luck & WELCOME TO THE FORUM!!!!

You came to a great place to hang out....just don't let it get in the way of your practice time!!! :13:

OH P.S. Don't ever get rid of that guitar if you can help it. 20-30-40 years from now, it will be very cool to still have the guitar you learned to play on!!!! :13: :)

M-80, one of my 3 all time favorite heads

I'm assuming you're playing heavy/hard rock music? If that's the case, I wouldn't buy a Fender amp for that style of music.

Re: Beginner in need of Advice

I used to own a MG100DFX, it was sufficient for hard rock tones, however towards topping out with a live band - the tone would suffer due to the fact that it's a SOLID-STATE amplifier. It could handle my volumes alright (NOTE: My drummer hits those drums excessively hard!), but for me (a tone freak), it just wasn't cutting it. So I went tube. For a beginner who wants to improve his live setup, I'd first work on the amplifier. Since you are playing Metallica, I would grab a more sufficient amplifier suitable to metal tones and volume. I would highly recommend a Crate GFX/GLX/MX series amplifier, preferably a 2x12 version. That would settle you down nicely!

Re: Beginner in need of Advice

As you can see most of us have different opinions on what for you to do, mine (on page 1 of this thread) was to buy a new amp 1st and upgrade guitar, i said that from personal experience and it worked excellent for me..I would recommend the same definitly because a Great Guitar will sound mediocre in a mediocre amp, but a mediocre guitar will sound mediocre in a Great Amp... And if you put new pickups in that Mediocre guitar it will sound Great..

so essentially its a great sounding guitar into a great amp...
