Re: Beginner jazz: Which string set to start with?

Is the razor there for size comparison, or is it a cry for help?

OK - maybe not the Honeytone, but run of the mill Crate, Peavey, Roland, whatever in the 30 watt range and move on. My Peavey Studio Pro could craft some jazz sounds way sweeter than any chops I could apply to them.

The current owner of my old Roland Cube 60 gets some KILLER Jazz tones out of it with a Epiphone Dot.

He just stays in the JC120 channel and uses a couple of pedals here and there.
Sounds like a grand piano.

Ha! The razor blade was already there; I was using it to open the Lutron package and decided to leave it for scale.

What advantage does a solid-state amp have over a clean tube amp that's comfortably far from breakup in both the preamp and power sections? I might be forced to make do with a tube amp for a while. When I tried out the Ibanez, I was getting pleasing sounds from a Peavey ValveKing.

Waaaa... I have to use a tube amp to get a jazz tone. :chairfall

I guarantee I could get an awesome jazz tone out of any of my tube amps.

Re: Beginner jazz: Which string set to start with?

I was being facetious. My confidence on being able to get great jazz tones out of each of my three tube amps:

One "Definitely."
One "Most likely."
And a "Probably."

I know George Van Eps tuned string 7 down to A, and used between .075 and .080 for it. He was also tuned down a whole step (so the A was really a G). His music really benefits from that deep bass.

Re: Beginner jazz: Which string set to start with?

I might encounter resistance from the guitar's own hardware if I try to go higher than the Chrome 65 I have right now. The hole in the tuning peg and the slot in the tailpiece may object.

The A string has some really cool uses too in terms of giving yourself bass notes an harmony. Any note that you would normally play on the A string can now be shifted down two strings to the low A without changing fingerings at all.

A fairly standard Major 9 voicing like CMaj9: (x 3 2 4 3 x) can now be played with the C on the 7th string as such: (3 x x 2 4 3 x) with the same harmony and melodic notes but a much richer bass sound. If you really wanted a lush chord in solo guitar you could even just play the doublings and the 5th: ( 3 3 3 2 4 3 x ) with your middle finger barring C, G, C on the bottom three strings.

Serious tone. Can you find any clips where we can clearly hear the drop G?!

Re: Beginner jazz: Which string set to start with?

In Jazz you don't bend. You "slur".

HTH,

This is true. I had to play a solo for jazz combo and I thought my professor was going to recreate a scene from Whiplash when I bent up a whole step.

^ Then ax them what's their opinion of this guy's technique.

He has several entire albums on YouTube. My guess is that most of his recorded output is out of print.
