Beginner magnet swapper and the Jazz

I finally got up the nerve to take the ceramic magnets out of my "vintage Deans" and insert Al 2s. I figured WTH I can alway buy something I know I like if the experiment goes south. I was very pleasntly surprised at the positive results from Al 2s and leaving the covers off. I have no urge to change them....at the moment

I have heard a few clips from the board with a 59 bridge with an Al 2....can't remember who posted the link (but thanks) and I believe I'll give that one a go as I have a couple

The Jazz....I've read a bout a few using an Al 4, but has anyone tried an Al 2?

TIA

Ah, the creation of a new mag swapper. Welcome to the club. It opens the door to all kinds of tonal possibilities.

I have a JazzN, but still have the A5 in it. Since it's a little bland and timid to begin with, I'm afraid it will be even more so if I take out the A5. Like you, I'm interested to hear who has tried other magnets in a JazzN and what they think.

What are the DC readings of those p'ups...?

If your talking about the Deans, I was told by Brad Mader at Dean that the bridge was in the 14-15k range and the neck was 8-10k. I don't think that is what you're after, but it is all I have. I did not test the pickups post swap.

The magnet DOES NOT affect the DC reading. Any working coil would read, with or without a magnet.

Re: Beginner magnet swapper and the Jazz

That I don't know. I'm assuming I need to disconnect them to get a reading.

No. You put a guitar plug in it and put the probes in Hot and Ground. Put both volume and tone to max, then toggle to the neck p'up first, write down the reading, then switch the toggle to the bridge position to get the second reading. That's all there's to it.

If I'm correct, I'm pretty sure the Jazz neck is the same wind as an APH......Jazz has A5, and the APH has A2. I prefer the Jazz out of the 2.

But ultimately, the Pearly Gates neck is my favorite....a bright sounding A2.

Are you sure? To me the APH sounds a lot better than a JazzN. I'd think an APH with an A5 would have more cut and output than a JazzN, which is kind of bland to me.

I guess I'll try it. I mean...it's just a magnet.

Well, the neck p'up is very hot indeed; it may work ok with a Ceramic magnet... I've seen this kind of winds only in A5 Epi p'ups that were mud city all the way... after I've modded it became an ok BRIDGE p'up!

Your 13.29K bridge p'up could very well take an A8 magnet.

I'd change the neck to a '59n though. Or I'd get a DUNCAN DESIGNED HB101n, if the budget is tight.

HTH,

HTH,

If I like the way they sound with Al2s why would I change them? I mean for now the chase is over. I took a set of bland stock pickup and I'm getting some pretty nice tone from them.

My original topic was pointed at changing the magnet in a Jazz neck.
