Hi everybody,

Made it over to Aztec Studios last night for some sessions, and squeezed in a couple of short clips demo'ing behind the slide technique.

Everything's done with standard tuning.
The first 2 clips feature the slide.

Randy,

I got sidetracked, but finally had a chance to listen to these cuts. Great slide tone. What makes it behind-the-slide? I assume it means fingering additional notes with the non-slide fingers, which if true must mean that you use the slide on your pinky.

Anyway, you should definitely work up "For Leigh", as you already have a fine start.

I use the slide on my ring finger, so I can fret notes behind the slide with the index and middle, and ahead of it with the pinky. That makes it so I can hit major and minor thirds ascending or descending, like I did with "Otis...". You can do other intervals as well, like 5ths and 6ths, where you skip strings. You can also do a lot of chord stuff with it, and I think that's what Sonny Landreth does, all kinds of modulations of the basic chord pattern that he's tuned to. With "For Leigh," I slide up to the first note, then fret the next 2, and slide again to the high "b" note. Its cool using standard tuning, since I'm much more familiar with the fretboard patterns.

Cool playing! Right up my alley. I love that Cotton Patch tune! I normally use the slide on my pinky, only because I always thought it free'd up more chording fingers, but you do the ring finger, freeing up the pinky for chording behind the slide! Interesting! I don't play as much slide as I used to. I seem to immerse myself only in the style I'm doing at the time. Right now, I'm working on ultra modern stuff, making the guitar sound less like a guitar. Listening to your playing makes me want to sit down with slide more often! Good stuff!

Hi Gearjoneser!

Yeah, the pinky just wouldn't work for me. Wonder why it is that some people do great with the pinky, and can't get along with the ring finger and vice versa. I'm using a pick, and wonder if it would be better to switch to using my fingers.

Didn't you do a gig with Eric Sardinas? I need to check him out. Same thing with some other guys. Keb Mo. Saw him on TV, and he was great. There's a lot more to do with this, and I'm just getting started. Funny with slide that it seems impossible when you first start, then you somehow get to where you can do it without too much trouble at all.
