Vox MV50 "Rock" model (Marshall-voiced) paired with an old Peavey Rage combo amp, converted to a 1-8" cabinet. My son's first band blew up the Rage trying to use it as a vocal monitor. When I couldn't repair it, I re-purposed it. The cabinet usually stays in the workshop to test amplifiers, but it makes such a cute little rig with the MV50 (which, by the way, can produce enough power to incinerate the little 8" speaker) that I moved it upstairs to the studio.

I actually just had a chance to try it. That little Vox sounds damn good, even at conversation levels. The Deep switch on the back adds some low end to little cabs. Gain-wise, the first 1/3 of the knob covers my needs, the same amount of dirt I used to get out of my JMP master volume heads and single-channel JCM800s. Beyond that, we're into modded or modern Marshall levels of gain. I usually keep gain relatively low and boost leads with a BB Preamp, which works with this amp. OTOH, turning up the gain to 2/3 and turning the guitar volume down works really well, too. In short, loads of fun, even with the volume down and running a cheap 8" speaker.

Vox emphasized the cool factor by putting a blue, diamond-shaped window in the top. Through it, you can see NuTube flickering inside. It lights up for silence and dims when you play.

Tomorrow when everyone's out, I'll run it through a 12" and crank it up. I want to see the VU meter move.

Well, I tried it into my open back cab with an Emi 1258 in it this morning. With the volume at 1/3 it's as loud as I'd ever need at home, similar to what I use for gigging. Sounds and acts like a Marshall. I like the Deep switch "on" with this speaker, it adds a bit of quad-cab thump to the small open-back 1-12".

Seriously, if I kicked one pedal off my board, I could stick this on there and gig with just a speaker cabinet and my pedalboard.

I have a old Princeton Chorus that died on me a while back so I dropped in two 10in ALNICO Tone Tubby Silver Bullets. It's probably the best sounding cabinet that I own now .....
