Besides Lew, whose opinion do you trust most?

Good point. I'd trust someone like Zerb or Robert S. when it comes to the high gain stuff more than someone like me who doesn't ever play that way. I think I'm pretty good at the vintage or medium output recomendations...that's kind of my forte. I tend to stay out of the heavy metal recomendations because when it comes to that style there's guys with way way more direct experience. I'm good with the jazz, classic rock and blues recomendations. Lew

I agree and I guess I fit into the same realm as you Lew....I can't chime in for the heavy players cause I'm just clueless, but I do read alot of those posts on those topics.

and John, of course!

see .. the minute you leave one name off of a list you're in trouble

I think besides the "regulars", we're all fans of tone, though, so everyone's views are respected here.

I know I'm always learning. :)

Ahhhh heck Curly it was only my post that you left me out on! LOL...Can't satisfy my ego? :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:

Ha!!! Well that's what'cha get for playing exclusively through computor speakers! :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: When it comes to wiring questions, Artie's the man, BTW. Just don't ask him what your pickup will sound like through a Marshall. :laugh2: Lew

Re: Besides Lew, whose opinion do you trust most?

Well, I can tell you I've learned a ton from this forum, and as was stated before, not just about pickups but everything related to playing the guitar. Every time I post a question I get good advise.

Thanks to you all!

Someday I'll be able to return the favor!

Only my own I trust for sure :)

Everyone is different and I often see /read/hear others experiences with pups that differ completely with mine..whether its just taste or differences in gear remains to be seen.

As an example, there is very little love here for Gibson pickups. I prefer BBs (pros or 1/2) over Duncans through my rigs to be honest. For a high output pickup, I think the 498T is even steven with a Custom or JB or whatnot. I think picking the right guitar with good wood quality makes all the difference in the Gibson pups. If your guitar is lacking some way "aftermarket" pups will help address the (tonal) deficiency. Pick the right guitar (tonally) in the first place, choose the right amp, speakers/cab and the Gibson pups give you those classic Gibson sounds you hear on Album/CD no problem (if thats what you want). If you are trying to make your Faded Flying V through a Peavey Classic 30 1x12 combo sound like Eric Clapton w/Cream playing a SG through a Stack of 100w Marshalls, then yeah, you likely will have better luck with some other pup that makes up for the "deficiency" in your gear (so to speak).

Thats my experience anyway, YMMV :)
Couldn't agree more!!

Re: Besides Lew, whose opinion do you trust most?

Artie on the wiring diagrams, Jon Moore (he pops in here from time to time, forget his screen name) and Doc Barlo on winding, and even though we play very different kinds of music, Wicked Lester's description of Alnico 8 (and thus turning me on to it) was so scary dead-on that there just is no not respecting his ear.

As others have said, there are more and I hope I didn't slight anyone.

Re: Besides Lew, whose opinion do you trust most?

I couldn't possibly name all of those whose advice has been useful to me. This is the best and most friendly, and USEFUL forum I've ever visited. I wouldn't want to insult anybody by leaving them out. Thanks all!!

Where is Lester? I have not seen him in ages! He used to be here *all* of the time!

Re: Besides Lew, whose opinion do you trust most?

The guy I have gotten the best advice from is Martian...he is an extremely knowledgeable tech and has given me some great advice about different pickups (and different brands of pickups). He knows his stuff and has no agenda. Doc Barlo is always interesting and enriching to read, too.

Re: Besides Lew, whose opinion do you trust most?

Pickup guru who we don't hear enough from lately: Jeremy
Pickup guru I would listen to if or when I get a Tele: Rev. Donzo
Pickup guru group award: The L.I. Jam guys (Jeffrec, Wattage, bludave, kmcguitars, et al)

Re: Besides Lew, whose opinion do you trust most?

Honestly, I don't really trusy anybody.

Why is that? My 3 favorite pickups are the JB, Invader, and EMG 81. If I listened to people on here, I'd have never tried them.

I wouldn't want to leave anyone out...but those here who's opinion's I regard very highly would be Gearjoneser and Robert S., Christian (the Guy Who Invented Fire), Bludave, Luke Duke, Zerb, Doc Barlo, John, Curly, Scott F., Jeremy, BachtoRock, Evan and a few others who's names will come to me later I'm sure! Lew

HOLY MOTHER I MADE LEW'S LIST!!!!

I listen to everybody, but particularly to the guys who I'm under the impression that I hear what they hear.

Also I more into the vintage, or vintage-esque sounds brought forward so the folks who know more about that automatically get my ear, and their thoughts carry a lot of weight.

The Ultimate Strat Tone, and Ultimate Tele Tone threads shall stand the test of time!!!
