Im looking at either a C5 or a S Deamon in my Ibanez RG220. What p/u will do 80s - 90s Metal better, I allready have a JB in my other 220 so I want something a little different. I have used both pups but just wanted some feedback to see what you guys thought.

Have you thought about the Blues Trembucker? It's a medium output pickup with a more balanced EQ than the Demon or C5. It's warmer sounding than either of those, but it has enough brightness to cut through the mix without being too trebly. It's my favorite pickup for Floyd Rose guitars, which I'll assume your Ibanez has. I have a Blues in the bridge of my basswood Wolfgang at the moment.

While I never used a C5 or S Demon, I have a rear-routed Fender Strat with a basswood body and Floyd Rose. It's equiped with a DiMarzio Super Distortion in the bridge. It's a little more compressed sounding than my JB, but is really harmonically rich. And for 80's metal, I don't think anything can beat a Super Distortion.

Re: Best 4 METAL in Basswood ?

The Dimarzio Super Distortion is perfect if you want just great distortion.

If you want a bit more versatile pup that can still nail metal flawlessly, look into the C5. It has a scooped type of eq to it which should nail those traditional 80s metal type tones.

The EMG 85 works fantastic in basswood Ibanez' for metal. Listen to Fletcher of Pennywise (particularly track 13 on the Straight Ahead CD) for a sample of it.

The DiMarzio Super Distortion is great for more than just distortion. You can get a great clean sound from it and it also sounds wonderful in parallel or coil split mode. I have some awesome pickups from both DiMarzio and Seymour Duncan, but I consider my Super Distortions my most versatile bridge pickups.

Thank you ... Glad someone said it finally ... :)

I'm not sure if I'd agree with that statement ... Scooping the mids before distortion has a much different effect than after distortion (If that's what you are referring to here that is ). Genrally with high gain you want more mids, to drive the amp harder while suppressing the upper highs to keep noise and screechiness down, and a leaner bass resonse to keep the low notes from getting muddy and losing punch and grind. Although, clean I can see that, as most metal parts clean are all high end, and the mid cut would clean up nicely, while the extra bass would keep it from getting to thin sounding.
The highs self-explanatory of course.

I wouldn't call Pennywise metal. Yeah they have a nice sound. I wanted to put a 85 in my RG too. But I thought going passive is more my way. I find fletchers sound always a bit too perfect.

Re: Best 4 METAL in Basswood ?

Yea they're not a metal band, but he has meaty metal tone for a punk. I like the processed EMG sound. But for passive I hear the Invader works well also.

Re: Best 4 METAL in Basswood ?

Have you guys heard fletchers tone live? Over the top! Huge! But on the albums I find his tone a little bland. I don't think his tone is 'metal'. It's more of a modern punkrock tone.

I'd say a DD will do any metal very well. Aren't DD's and Super Distortions quite similar?

Re: Best 4 METAL in Basswood ?

yeah i read a interview. he use to play two mark 4 parallel and he cares much about the cabs. he said that he need a tight sound coz he's playing fast and don't want to have mud. Never saw them live though It used to be my favourite band.
