Best $600+/- Guitar?

So I love my Warmoths to death. Two beautiful telecasters. HOWEVER, because I love them so much I'm terrified of taking them anywhere. Well, mostly the orange tele, but the telecaster deluxe scares me some too. I want a beater guitar that'll sound decent and I can carry around to friends' houses or parties or whatever and not have to worry much about. Being light would be a plus too, but thats just me being a wuss with scoliosis (and therefore bad back).

I'd prefer a hardtail, but a vintage style trem wouldn't be a deal breaker. I'm pretty open to most pickup configurations, but I'd like to keep away from strats and teles (since I feel like I have some of those sounds covered with my Warmoths already).

So anybody? Suggestions?

Have you thought of Schecter or Michael Kelly?

Both AMAZING bang for buck if you're willing to not get stuck on their non-traditional appearance.

For that kind of money you get one of their better guitars where you'll only MAY want to change the pickups, and that because you might want sth "different", not "better".

I love this forum. I'm not sure if you guys are mind readers or just GAS inducers (or both) but I've been looking at the new Gibson Melody Makers and some of the SE line up recently.

I used to own an SE Soapbar II way back when. AWESOME playing guitar and super light. Still kick myself for selling it. "The P-90's are just too noisy." Yeah, it was a dumb move.

And that Charvel is ridiculously cool. I love the HS pickup configuration...

Epi SG (G-400) or a PRS SE Santana. Both are lightweight (the weight of Epi SG's varies, so check it first).

Atomic! Thats where I bought my first "real" guitar (black beat-to-hell SG Special). Not the one in Rockville, but the one in College Park. Can't believe I hadn't thought of them. I have a doctors appointment in Rockville on Thursday so I think I'll hit the Guitar Center and Atomic while I'm there and play some stuff. I'm having some serious 335 GAS so maybe I'll try out some Epi Dots or something.

I really dig the JA-90 and the Pawn Shop series guitars man, they look, feel and sound good and are great bang for your buck. If I had the money, that's where I would be putting it right now...
