Re: Best Acoustic Brand? VOTE NOW!

For tone.....Martin
For playability....Taylor
I went with Martin, although there is no "best" company. I guess you have to play a boatload of good guitars to find one magical one.
I have a D-28 that's great, but there's something I miss about the neck on my old Taylor 510. I'm contemplating selling the D-28 to get one of Taylor's top guitars.

I love all the other boutique acoustics mentioned, but unless I find one for less than $1500, it's outta the question. $1500 is my limit on how much I'll spend on a great used acoustic. So basically, I'm willing to spend $1500 for a $2600 guitar.
There's always a rich guy willing to take a loss! LOL

Re: Best Acoustic Brand? VOTE NOW!

I own two acoustics. I have a Martin D-16GT, and a Taylor 514ce. I prefer Martins for straight acoustic playing. When plugged in, I prefer older Taylor's, with a Fishman pickup system. The best sounding acoustic I've played was a Martin D-45V, and with a $9,100 list price it should sound fantastic, and it did!!!!

my Martin. I'm addicted to that tone. Each time I pick it up, I fall in love with it all over again...

Same here, and I've been picking up my D-35 for over 33 years now!

That said, there are lots of acoustic guitars out there worthy of loving. My "beater" is a used Seagull S-6 Folk that is a fine fingerstyle instrument, especially considering the price and I still miss my previous beater, a '71 Guild D-25 that was ripped off about a year ago.

I love my Yamaki like a baby . . . I know that nobody has ever heard of them before, but they're really fantastic guitars.

Re: Best Acoustic Brand? VOTE NOW!

I'm not into acoustic guitars but last year when I visited Musik Messe, Frankfurt the best guitar (beating every other electric guitars of any type, including solidbody electric guitars for 5K+$$$) I played was a Martin nylon string. Plus, Mr Martin is a rather nice guy. My vote is for Martin.

Re: Best Acoustic Brand? VOTE NOW!

I've got an '87 Takamine EN10C (cedar top and mahog body w/ cutaway). Sounds super sweet. Plays like butter. Unplugged it is slightly thin on the bass, but not so much that you'd call it weak or tinny. The cutaway is very ergodynamic and upper fret access allows me to migrate most of my electric "moves" directly into the same positions on the acoustic. Also, it cuts through really nice, even through a flood of other acoustics playing at the same time.

On stage (plugged in) it can pretty much nail any style/genre that is appropriate to an acoustic sound (country stuff, mellow classic rock, grungy buzz slide blues, tender Zeppelin, etc...). Very quiet electonics. My only complaint here is that the sliders for the EQ and Gain are extremely sensitive, and its hard to adjust in the middle of a song without instantly going way too loud, way too soft, way too trebbly, or way to muddy. It doesn't kill me, but if I had to complain about something...that would be all.

I'm surprised more Takamines aren't being voted for. My own experience whenever I show up at open acoustic jams and campfire sessions (or basically anywhere that there will be at least 4-5 acoustic players present) is that "everyone" always wants to check out my Tak, and I have to petition to get it back. ("ok dude, just one more tune and then can I have it back?")

It gets "so bad" that I believe the proper pronunciation of the brand is not "Tak-uh-meany", but rather "Take-mine"!!!

Re: Best Acoustic Brand? VOTE NOW!

oopps forgot about takmine my bad! Ya my uncle has one its a jumbo with a cutaway and i did notice it being a bit thin sounding. My friend told me his buddy had a tak as well and he sold it due to the thin sound, he didnt like it unplugged, but with a good amp is was good.

Its no surprise though that taylor is in the lead. I tried a hihger end martin yesterday and i wasn't that impressed. Myabe its just me though or a bad guitar set up?

Re: Best Acoustic Brand? VOTE NOW!

I have to go with Ovation.

I just love the tone, the access, and the feel of 'em.

Why? None of those is the best! :laugh2:

I voted for Taylor. #2 would be Martin. I love 'em both but I think the odds of getting a great guitar are better with Taylor.

+1

Then again, I would LOVE to get my hands on a Charis (gotta love the name). Here is the one my friend Scott received in an endorsement deal:

Re: Best Acoustic Brand? VOTE NOW!

I voted Martin, for no other reason than the D-15 (all mahogany) is the best acoustic I've ever laid hands on. Honestly, though, all the brands listed make excellent stuff.

Re: Best Acoustic Brand? VOTE NOW!

I played a taylor about 3 weeks about and it was absolutely awesome.
so i voted taylor, never played a martin though.
