Best advice for removing glued tuners...

Re: Best advice for removing glued tuners...

Yeah, I definitely hear you guys on both accounts. The lacquer damage bugs me a bit, but in retrospec, it's only a small "offense". What has been done to the guitar has been done. The guitar has most of the typical '70s-'80s mods you can think of. Drilled hole for a dpdt switch, Dimarzio Super D's, Schallers, chrome nashville/stoptail, and sloppy routing for the HBs. Only thing missing is the kahler lol.

Edit: I'm just trying to give her some memories prior to the mods and lighten the weight. All the heavy hardware weighs about 10-14 ozs. The guitar is 9lbs 3 oz. I think I can get it to be 8 lbs 12 ozs.

All that for 5 oz? You know that's just 140 grams, like a yogurt cup???

What kind of routing for Super Ds? Was it a minihum or P90 guitar before?

PS if it had had a kahler too, I'd be torn between putting it on a pedestal and worshipping it, and leading the angry mob to fetch the pitchforks and torches... Awesome modlist, why you blaspheming against the greatness??

Personally, I'd LOOVE a gibby with those mods and be totally indifferent to one without em

Re: Best advice for removing glued tuners...

Not sure how removing tuners constitutes "all that [work]". It's my guitar for one. It's been modded to hell for two. I think losing a bit of adhered lacquer to the parts isn't as bad as poorly routing and gouging the p90 slots for HBs.

Seeing how adjusting my guitar to my tastes bugs you, I can label them "Adieu's pedestal parts". I have them in a baggie if you want that altar built.

The problem is thinking or believing that the opinion one person holds should be the opinion of EVERYONE.

Very true. Plus, it's your guitar so you can actually do anything you want. I couldn't tell some of the things you mentioned just from looking at the pics, but you're right; once something is already modded so much what does a bit more matter, especially if it get's you exactly where you want to be with the guitar? Best of luck getting her under 9 labs.

Ps.....I bet that guitar has some great tone. I would love to have an early 70's LP Deluxe.

Re: Best advice for removing glued tuners...

Looks like an awesome player. Seems like you could have sold it to Adieu and bought two Deluxes, one to mod and one to worship. Gibson, Uber Alles.

Amen.

And, to be clear, my previous post on the Grover vintage style machines was about my taking the easy way out if I wanted to swap the schallers for vintage style tuners. It was not a knock on what you wanted or how you accomplished it. I'm glad it's shaping up to your liking.

Re: Best advice for removing glued tuners...

Are you sure the finish didn’t stick to the tuners? Wood glue does not stick to metal, especially polished metal.

Acetone would melt the lacquer-it’s what they use to remove nail polish. Naphtha won’t do anything. If it is wood glue then heat will release it. But you could damage the finish.

I’d grab them in padded vice grip jaws from the back and twist.

both naphtha and aceton will dissolve acrylic varnish clear coats. (dont know the case with gibson).

I use naphtha for cleaning lacquer finishes all the time. It’s good for removing gunk from stickers and things. It’s very standard in the repair field, and recommended by luthiers such as Dan Erlewine.

It’s a petroleum product like lemon oil (mineral spirits). Neither will react with most cured finishes. But you don’t want to soak a guitar in it. It evaporates very quickly which helps.

Acetone is a very strong solvent in comparison. Even short contact can mar a finish.

Re: Best advice for removing glued tuners...

Update: The guitar went from 9 lbs 6 ounces to 9 lbs flat. Maybe a hair under. Digging the new hardware. Up next is new pots, jack, and luxe cap (a black beauty lost a leg). Rewind Electric Low Output Set ('60 PAF clones) sounds epic in the guitar. James winds killer pickups. I decided to let her wear the scars proudly. Very happy with it.

Re: Best advice for removing glued tuners...

I know you like the double ring tuner buttons. I just replaced the Grover Rotomatics in my Tribute with Schaller G-series vintage style machines. I didn't care about the double rings on the buttons but the Schallers were the double ring version. They go in the 10mm holes and use the modern, threaded bushings and top washers. I know you're set but just offering an option if you ever want to try and cover the scars up top of the headstock without bothering with re-finishing.

^^ Thanks for posting that. I was unaware that schaller made vintage style tuners. Like I said before, I wasn't dead set on any brand, but the actual tuner buttons. Would've loved a set of hipshot tuners, but to my knowledge at the time, only kluson made double ring tuning buttons. Cool, I think I'll be buying a set for my SG restoration. I might switch them down the road if they work well in the SG.

No problem. I had two sloppy Grover Rotomatics on the Tribute and decided to replace them with vintage style machines. I just happened to come across the Schallers for $41 (plus $5 shipping, I think) at the Stratosphere on fleebay and they happened to be the ones with double ring buttons. I didn't know they had them with double rings either. The single ring Schallers seem a lot more common. They are 16:1 and smooth. Nice machines.

Anyway, just thought I'd give you a heads up.
