Best amp with EL34(within my budget) or a good distortion pedal

Cans omeone recommend either a good head, atleast under 1,600$ that works well with EL34 and for obtaining "British" Tone? Or maybe a good distortion pedal that replicates that tone?

Are EL34's the tubes Marshall used?

I'd look for a used Marshall JCM 800 50 watt single channel with hi/lo inputs set vertically with EL-34's. The '82 version is nice and hopefully you can find one that's had the 6550's replaced with EL-34's.

Get yourself one of these! Carvin X-amp. I have the XV-212 combo with EL-34's and I love it. The clean sound alone is worth the price. Very close to a Twin and will not break up no matter how hard you try. Sounds great with pedals. The distortion channel is more like a Hot Rodded JCM800 and has it's own unique sound. I have no problems getting blues, classic rock and metal tones from this amp.
Alot of people knock these amps and it is probably due to the fact that they had the older 6L6 versions. The distortion on these is very buzzy and unpleasent. I use Svetlana =C= El-34's in mine and I must say it is one of the best amps I've ever had! The best part is that they can still be found cheap! I paid $250 for mine from the original owner and it is in amazingly great shape for a 13 year old amp.

+1

That's probably the tone you're after. And with the left over money you can upgrade some other parts of you're tone also. Maybe some speakers or pickups or a good overdrive for the front of the amp (like a sparkle drive by voodooo labs or you may even have enough left for a boutique)

Yeah I'e ntoiced no marshall amsps come with el34 tubes and I thought those were the main Marshall tubes back then... What modifications will I need to do to an amp if I put in EL34's?

If you want to go way under that budget you could try out a Traynor YCV Blue . . .

Re: Best amp with EL34(within my budget) or a good distortion pedal

where do you want to use it?
Home, gigs?

I just think that Old Marshalls ( JCM800 and before) which are the only Marshalls i would recommend need a bit of crankin and they arent that friendly for home use.
Newer amps that are more clones of Marshalls, like VHT, Bogner, Etc.. will give you those tones at more 'playable' volumes. Check out Splawn as well.

I know that many people think that Marshall is the only way to go. But i sincerely think that other people can make you a Marshall clone with waaaay better parts for the kind of money you are mentioning.
There is a guy on here that does a Marshall clone called the Edana. i would trust him way more than getting a new Marshall.

Just my 2 cents
