Best Boost Pedal?

Andrew Lamprecht

What is the best boost pedal for adding an extra bit of natural overdrive?

The one that has been most recommended is the LPB-1 by EH. Another one was the micro amp from MXR.

Any other suggestions or comments on the above two?

Thanks, Andrew

Re: Best Boost Pedal?

try the Timmy, it's worth the wait, as they say. or the copy of it, a Trans OD by Danelectro.

Re: Best Boost Pedal?

Im partial to Rangemasters myself but Tubescreamers and SD-1's make fine boost pedals...

There are 17.9 million "boost" pedals out there...almost ANY of them will do what you want, you just have to fine one (or 2 or 3!) that you really vibe with and keep them...

Analogman Beano boost. It's a rangemaster clone, but MAN does it make any guitar + amp combo sound incredible!

TS-9

With that said, I do like the LPB-1 by EHX. It's not a very sophisticated boost, but don't confuse it with an overdrive. It serves its purpose well, to boost the frequencies, pushing the amp slightly, but it won't be as dynamic or crazy as the TS-9.

I use mine at the end of my effects chain when I have my mesa already pushing distortion hard from the pre-amp tubes, and I want to hit it just a tad harder for solos or lead work.

I know Phil, sorry. But my TS-9 just does the trick. True it's modded by our own John Spina, but Jimi & Stevie Ray cant be wrong. Right?

Re: Best Boost Pedal?

imo you gotta get one that's smooth 'n' fat(tube screamer-ish) and one that's got some grainy breakup(sd-1~ish). in fact, an sd-1 and/or ts-7 would do the trick:)

Re: Best Boost Pedal?

Uh, Jimi never used a TS style circuit (nor as other rumours claim a Big Muff circuit either).

An OD pedal like a TS is also useful for that type if tone, but a plain booster is a different type if sound. Similar to a fuzz in that it has to work well with your guitar/amp combo...

(I'd like to try a few if the BSM pedals...)

Re: Best Boost Pedal?

If all you want is boost - I dig the MXR micro amp, but there is a lot of love for the duncan pup booster here, obviiously. If just straight clean boost is what you want.

However - Why NOT use an EQ, a compressor, or an overdrive and add an extra feature or two? You don't HAVE to use them....but they are there if you want to goose/cut a frequency a bit, sustain, etc...
