Best booster pedals ?

Re: Best booster pedals ?

im probably best off going to the store, finding the Vox, and trying some dirty sounds with a few guitars and see which one does it the best.

Re: Best booster pedals ?

For what some of these pedals cost that have been suggested to you IMO you'd be better off putting a Hot Rails or JB Jnr in your Strat and using the amp more.

In my experience alot of modelling amps don't respond too well when boosted so in the short term atleast I think a more 'appropriate' pickup may be a better idea.

Re: Best booster pedals ?

A vox vt40+ should have more dirt than you will ever need. Especially since they have built in OD/Distortion pedals in the effects selection.

I still think a hot rails pickup would be the better investment.

As far as fronting a modeler with a real OD pedal. I tried it using a boss sd-1 and a hardwire cm-2 in front of my line6 UX1 on a few occasions. It actually worked pretty well surprisingly. That said, upgrade the Pickup(s).

These are great. My favorite booster at the moment. Brent Mason uses one too. And, if you do a search online, you'll find schematics, kits, parts lists, etc. to build one for yourself. One probably won't make an inexpensive modeling amp sound like a vintage Fender or Marshall, but one will make a lively sounding tube amp sound even livlier. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdux79tGh_Q

Re: Best booster pedals ?

Ye maybe a boost pedal wont do after all, well next purchase might just be a set of Hotrails or Everything Axe, or similar.

Re: Best booster pedals ?

Clean boosts are designed to push a tube input stage harder. Your modelling amp will not react in the same way. I'm surprised you can't get the sound you need using the gain/overdrive/eq of the amp.

Re: Best booster pedals ?

Yeah im going to :) sometimes i can get a really growly chugging sound, but no strong pinch harmonics, sometimes the other. Im close to finding the perfect balance of both.

Now THAT screams "new pups" to me...or more practice. Or both.

Re: Best booster pedals ?

I truly hope its not "more practice" this is stuff ive been doing for a few years now, and overall playing guitar for 7. I can nail pinch harmonics on my Frontman easily, the Marshall that i rented sounds too dark (would never buy it), the Vox is by far the best.

I'm most likely gonna get an "Everything Axe" set, i like the sound more then Hot Rails, i think that'll put me in a good place between chug and harmonics.
